Here’s What Happens After Sheldon Adelson’s Arguments Get Body Slammed

body-slam

Sheldon Adelson is one of the world’s richest people.  He’s the majority owner of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, which owns and operates The Venetian.  He’s become online poker’s most outspoken opponent, launching what amounts to a smear campaign of lies and gross misrepresentations against online gaming, and poker players.  Adelson has even gone as far as to claim poker is not a game of skill.  “Just a bunch of baloney,” he says.

A funny thing happened over at Sheldon Adelson’s website this week.

The landing page for The Venetian has undergone some major changes.  The reasons for these changes bear noting because they reveal the gutter depths to which Adelson will go in order to cover up his actions and try to derail the movement to legalize online poker.

Last month, Adelson’s stooge got his ass frosted out in public when he appeared woefully unprepared in front of a congressional subcommittee.  Testifying on a proposed federal bill that would tax and regulate the industry, one of Adelson’s messengers cited all the (wildly exaggerated) potential dangers of associated with gambling with mobile devices.

The highlight of the hearings (or lowlight for Adelson’s gang) occurred when two congressmen — one Republican and the other a Democrat — exposed The Venetian’s own blatant hypocrisy on the matter when the company’s website was discovered and the contents shown to the committee.  Causing some who were in attendance to openly chuckle, The Venetian was revealed to be quite active in promoting gambling on mobile devices.  It was a real eye-popping moment, a “hand caught in the cookie jar” gaffe for the paid mule forced to sit there and take it all in, saddled with Adelson’s embarrassing baggage.

Well, wouldn’t you know it?

Earlier this week my good pal Mike Qualley, who does some great work representing the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) in Minnesota, attempted to log in at The Venetian official website.  He was surprised to see the site is undergoing some serious housecleaning at the moment.  Here’s the landing page for what used to be Sheldon Adelson’s promotion of online gaming through mobile applications.

Don’t worry.  It’s not your search engine that’s messed up.  When you click the link, you should get an error message, which is affixed clearly to The Venetian logo.

So, as soon as Adelson’s flunkies were caught before congress with their pants down, the underlings in the high-tech department over at The Venetian grabbed rubber gloves and scrub brushes and went to work, hoping to retool the website and get rid of all the damning evidence.  Like the family dog that knocked over the fine china, they now wag their tails, pretend that nothing happened, and hope you won’t notice.

Well sorry, we noticed.

Sometimes you can clean up the mess, but you can’t ever get rid of the smell.
