When Cruelty Becomes the New Normal

I can’t believe I’m having to write this. Not in the year 2025. Not in this country. This is not normal. I mean, it shouldn’t be normal. Ever. Especially not in this day and age. But it is.

Cruelty has become normal.

I don’t care about those many millions who are ignorant, not do I care about their racism. I really don’t. Hate can easily be dismissed — though never ignored. Pretending ignorance and racism doesn’t exist is dangerous. History proves that, as America has always overflowed with mass ignorance and overt racism — often masked as patriotism — whether the 1700s, 1800s, 1900s, or sadly even now in the 2000s. We can argue about progress that’s been made and how far we’ve come collectively speaking, or the lack thereof. We can also debate the ways to improve education and diminish racism. We can even discuss the many reasons for ignorance and racism.

What I do know is — it’s impossible to defeat when it comes from THE TOP.

Indeed, what isn’t debatable is the common aspiration that OUR LEADERS should be *better* than us. OUR LEADERS shouldn’t reflect who we are and all of our collective stupidity and irrational prejudices, but rather to inspire us to be *better* than who we are. To aim higher. Those are the people to look up to. Those who make us *better.* That’s LEADERSHIP.

Currently, we are not led by a wise leader who lifts us up. Instead, we’re led by a buffoon and a bigot who punches down, usually at the weakest and most vulnerable among us. Trump’s outburst last week calling an entire group of immigrants — make that LEGAL IMMIGRANTS, many whom are now U.S. citizens just like most of our own parents and grandparents became after they arrived upon our shores — was utterly shocking in its unapologetic bigotry. But 75 million or so Americans love him because he’s “politically incorrect.” He says what he thinks, and in turn, that’s their mindset, too. He is THEM.

Were Trump’s words REALLY that shocking to anyone who’s been paying attention the previous decade of constant degradation? Nope — they weren’t. We’ve come to expect it. And, see — that’s the problem. Cruelty is something we’ve come to expect. Whether we admit it or not, cruelty is NORMAL, now.

Trump’s blathering stupidity isn’t a surprise to anyone, really. What’s truly shocking was the LACK OF OUTRAGE, all across America. The hate hardly even mattered, to say nothing of the grotesque mangling of Constitutional responsibilities toward *all* citizens by the nation’s highest elected public official. It was only a minor news story, a blip, until the next outrageous comment, or bogus lie. A racist tirade one might expect to hear from a drunken white supremacist in a redneck bar became the words and the thoughts of the President of the United States. Let that sink in. Just a normal day at the White House.

When an entire ethnic group must live in fear, there is no freedom nor democracy for anyone; nor a country worth admiration when its most powerful leader — a cruel man elected not once, but twice — blurts out such bigotry without objection, outrage, nor apology. Millions of people would be outraged if a so-called “leader” made those remarks against Jews, or Italian-Americans, or (White) Minnesotans. I don’t really care what you think of the politics of a state or any particular racial group or nationality. A LEADER of all the people simply DOESN’T DO THIS. How far away can “ethnic cleaning” be as the next step?

Please pay attention here. When we say that we *despise* Trump both as a President and a revolting person, it’s because of gross ignorance and grave bigotry like this. You call it “derangement syndrome?” We call it being a moral human being. We call it being Americans, worthy of the designation of exceptionalism. When we reluctantly announce that we no longer respect you, and in some cases we want NOTHING to do with you MAGA people, it’s precisely because you and they have been silent. Again and again and again and again and again. And, if and when you do SPEAK OUT, it’s always to make excuses or defend the indefensible.

This should never be normal. But now, it is.

History Repeats, and then History Repeats (Again)

What’s the whole point of going to great lengths to study history and try to take lessons from it, if all the benefits and blessings of that immense treasure trove of knowledge are IGNORED?

History has always been an important part of my life. History isn’t just fascinating purely as entertainment and even occasional amusement. History can also be immensely valuable — essential, in fact — because it helps us understand the present by revealing the causes and consequences of past events. This, in turn, may help us to make better future decisions.

Much of what we all do every day involves history, though we might not realize it. I’m not talking about watching The History Channel. It’s akin to not touching a hot stove because we remember what it feels like to get burned. Picking a place to eat is likely a decision made based on past experiences at that and other establishments. Driving a certain route to a destination is likely influenced by our memories of previous traffic patterns. Even trying to pick a winner in a football betting pool is almost entirely rooted in the teams’ past performances. And certainly, our opinions about politics, economics, culture, and current events were molded by our perceptions of historical events. So, dare I say — history is everything.

History made us who we are.

So, why then do we not ever seem to learn from it?

I admit this frustration is not just a pernicious source of personal resignation from much of the rest of society. It’s actually quite depressing. It becomes the basis of cynicism. What’s the whole point of going to great lengths to study history and try to take lessons from it, if all the benefits and blessings of that immense treasure trove of knowledge are IGNORED?

I’m not able to answer that question. Perhaps someone here has superior insight and can share, or at the very least provide evidence of why we should be optimistic. I’m reading. I’m listening.

I’ll use current events –because sadly– they’re the best evidence of a mass disconnect from history and reality.

— NOTHING was learned from the innumerable lies and catastrophic losses of war. Time after time, the depletion of national treasury which could have gone towards the betterment of society has been plundered — in Vietnam, in Afghanistan, in Iraq. Thousands of lives lost plus incalculable future costs have been the heavy price of our foreign conflicts in the recent past. Now, here we go again with talk of invading nations and instigating regime change, in Venezuela and Columbia. We NEVER seem to learn from history.

— NOTHING was learned from letting capitalism and financial institutions run wild. Nothing has been learned from what happens when regulations get slashed and oversight disappears, when reckless economic policies (and lack thereof) most recently plunged the entire world into an economic meltdown during the 2008 crash. It took us a decade to recover. Before that, we didn’t learn from the Wall Street Crash of 1987, nor before that the Great Depression on 1929 — all economic disasters that might have been avoided altogether with more control and better oversight. Now, here we go again with slashing regulations on banking, defanging Wall Street watchdogs, and allowing unscrupulous shareholder-driven corporations to do as they please, which potentially risks ruining us all once again. We NEVER seem to learn from history.

— NOTHING was learned from an estimated one-million American deaths, many/most of them unnecessary, because a dangerous virus was initially called a “hoax” by the leader of the country. Now, here we go again with gutting science and politicizing life and death issues, from spewing quacky theories on vaccines, to turning the once-respected Centers for Disease Control into a nest of conspiracy cranks, to mocking (and threatening to prosecute) real scientists and medical professionals, and to reconfiguring national health policy around provocative crackpot YouTube videos. And don’t even get me started on what happens to societies that restrict WOMEN’S reproductive rights. We NEVER seem to learn from history.

— NOTHING was learned from the horrors of the past. We thought we’d exorcised the demons and darkness of humanity known as McCarthyism, fascism, totalitarianism, authoritarianism, and avoided the frightening vestiges of a future Orwellian world described in “1984” (which is now ironically 41 years prior). Now, here we are. The Constitution is revealed to be fragile document, it’s guard rails in danger of being dismantled. International law is shaded, then violated, then openly trampled — while abuses are summarily celebrated by millions of cultist sycophants. We’ve come as close to a dictatorship as ever in our history, with at least three more years of this regime ahead–and who knows how far to the far-Right we’ll end up. Label me as pessimistic because….we NEVER seem to learn from history.

History lessons cascade with testimony, with data, with confirmation, with proof, with information, with witnesses, with documentation, and with WARNING SIGNS.

Of course, it doesn’t help that history is now disappearing from many educational curriculums. And the history that’s taught is getting severely whitewashed. Real history is being removed from museums, even the great institutions such as The Smithsonian. Real history is being stricken from school textbooks. Real history is being plucked off of library shelves, as more than 1,500 books have been banned in Texas alone. And perhaps worst of all, real history is being twisted and bastardized into an unrecognizable gargoyle of distorted reflection and grand illusion. Who is left and who will be there to teach the truth?

When real history disappears, so do we.

USA! USA! USA! — Oh Please, Just Shut Up

“USA! USA! USA!” …. OH PLEASE, JUST STOP

Back in 1976, I was 14. My father took me to an international track and field competition. It was held inside the Fort Worth Convention Center. Team USA faced TEAM USSR in a 3-day mini-Olympics. Track and field, pole vaulting, gymnastics, and all the usual sports were displayed. Despite the USA and USSR being intensely at odds on the global political stage, in sporting competition the mood was very different. The crowd of several thousand, almost all Americans and overwhelmingly Texans, cheered when the athletes from the Soviet Union did something spectacular. Sure, we were all cheering for our fellow Americans. Yet, our *guests* merited respect. They also deserved praise when they won or accomplished something big.

Farm Aid 2025

FARM AID 2025…..
SOCIALISM IN THE HEARTLAND…..
AND THE LAST LEAF ON THE TREE…

Late Saturday night, I tuned in and caught most of Willie Nelson’s one-hour set. Farm Aid 2025 was broadcast live from Minneapolis. The concert was shown start to finish on CNN. As has been his annual custom for four decades now (and counting), the beloved music legend closed out the latest chapter of Farm Aid with poignant songs and sentimental memories. It was the perfect close to a perfect day that blended hope, music, fun, and even a bit of chaos into an 11-hour benefit concert in support of America’s struggling farmers. Note: More about their “struggles” coming in a moment.

Thoughts on the Shooting

Aside from the moral and ethical questions on politically-targeted violence, in the most self-serving Machiavellian sense, the real lunacy with violent acts –including assassinations of public figures– is that they often produce the unintended consequence of elevating the profile of the victim. Violent acts usually backfire in terms of generating sympathy and popular support. If you’ve never heard of the victim before, well you’ve heard of him now. Who knows how many future book deals that’s worth or how many speaking engagements he’s going to enjoy, assuming he’s able to survive the ordeal.
