Ryan Riess, from East Lansing, MI is the 2013 world poker champion.
I witnessed all the drama unfold late last night at the Rio in Las Vegas. Moments after his victory, Riess was interviewed by members of the media while sitting next to more than $8 million in cash, his reward for the victory. The 23-year-old Michigan State graduate was also presented with a custom-designed gold-platinum-diamond bracelet, valued at more than $500,000.

Here’s Sunday night’s 2013 Poker Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which honored Tom McEvoy and Scotty Nguyen. Speakers included T.J. Cloutier, Phil Hellmuth, Wendeen Eolis, Rick O’Connell, and myself. We also heard from Tom’s daughter, Melanie.

The one striking thing that really sticks out above everything else when comparing American schools with their counterparts abroad is how much money, time, energy, and emphasis are placed on sports. Compare the typical campus experiences of a student in Asia versus America. What happens during school hours? Perhaps more important, what happens after school hours?
