Wine Review: Joseph Cattin Cremant d’Alsace Brut Rose

That’s my record on wine purchases from Alsace (France, but really it’s Germany), which isn’t just my favorite region …. it’s maybe the most perfect place on the face of the earth when it comes to cuisine, wine, lifestyle, politics, culture, and everything and anything that is worth living in life. Socialism. Butter. Wine. Butter. Battle of the Bulge. Butter. Cremants. Butter. French women. German precision. —That’s Alsace.
Oh, and Anthony Bourdain took his life in Alsace. Hey, what a postcard!
I’m in the midst of my Gewurtztraminer exploration and since only about 42 of them are imported into the United States on a major scale I’m close to 2/3 of the way through. Moreover, in the last 5 years I’ve been on a huge Alsace cremant kick, having tried probably two or three dozen. Call this an “education.”
Today’s lovely discovery was from Joseph Cattin which also makes a splendid Gewurtztraminer at about $18 a bottle. Trouble is, these superstars are sold out almost everywhere in the United States and trust me I’ve tried to get them. If you know the names Hugel and Trimbach, this is equally as good a wine at HALF the price. So, last week I discovered Joseph Cattin makes a cremant rose, and I had to order a couple of bottles. Today I cracked open the beauty and she did not disappoint.

This is worth enjoying….savoring….celebrating….and talking about. I encourage anyone and everyone to fully explore this region of wines. Really, it’s incredible to have never had a bad bottle of anything from Alsace. When I die, I want my ashes spread in the terroir. I want to be the next generations of cremants!
