Axl Rose in Concert

The great Axl Rose and I have many things in common.

Consider the following:  We both turn 51 today.

Image that.

Fifty-one years old — which means we’ve each been alive for more than half a century.

On the bright side, I’m just “8” in dog years.

Roman Catholic Revulsion

Pope Benedict

I was raised in the Roman Catholic Church.

To this day, most of my family are practicing Catholics.  I attended Catholic School (Holy Trinity in the Oak Lawn section of Dallas) — the same school run by the priest who gave President Kennedy last rights.  I attended mass regularly (strong emphasis on the past tense).  I was a member of the Knights of Columbus.  I once played on the church soccer team, which was called the “Crusaders” (seriously).  My Godfather graduated from the University of Notre Dame.  That’s as Catholic as it gets.

NOLAN DALLA:  2012 POSTED NFL SEASON RECORD

94 WINS – 87 LOSSES – 6 PUSHES —– (+ 22.6 units / 1 unit = $100)

STARTING BANKROLL:  $10,000.

CURRENT BANKROLL:  $12,260. —– (+$2,260)

BEST BETS OF THE WEEK:  13-7-0

Comments:  Despite the hype, this is my least favorite week of the NFL season.  Betting is reduced to a single game.  Give me any week of the regular season when there are a dozen or so games to chose from and a multitude of options.  That said, the Super Bowl does provide some interesting opportunities for proposition bettors.  That’s where the real money is to be made.  I have four recommendations for this game.

The Ten Greatest National Anthem Performances of All Time

Jose Feliciano, 1968

The Star Spangled Banner deserves to be sung, not faked.

Lip syncing the National Anthem is grossly disrespectful.  It’s fraudulent.  It’s a mockery.  Any performer who refuses to actually sing the anthem live should be debunked and the invitation should be withdrawn.

Unfortunately, lip syncing has become increasingly common at big events.  Even more baffling, some people even find faking the anthem to be acceptable.

I strongly disagree.

Our National Anthem deserves better.

At the very least, The Star Spangled Banner deserves to be honored with authenticity.

My Two Words for the NFL

I have two words to say to the National Football League.

Before expressing these two carefully crafted words, first I’d like to take some time and explain a few things.

So, listen.

You consistently treat me like a delinquent.  You insult me and many of my closest friends and colleagues.  You ignore the immense contributions we make to the extraordinary popularity of your product.  In short, you treat us like shit.

Don’t deny it.  It’s true.
