Will There Ever Be an NFL Female Head Coach?

WILL THERE EVER BE AN NFL HEAD COACH WHO’S A WOMAN?

We’ve seen women make significant inroads into professional sports in recent years.

Now, women make executive decisions in the front office. A dozen women are assistant coaches in the NFL. Women work in broadcasting and even do in-game play-by-play. Women have become NFL referees.  Oh, and of course — women also own pro sports teams — 8 NFL teams have a female majority owner!

Women have made steady progress in the NBA, as well. While the NHL and MLB haven’t provided as many opportunities, that’s likely to change as the allure of pro sports with so many high-profile opportunities for advancement will entice more women to pursue those careers.

As to core competency, I presume women could be just as good (or bad) at coaching as men. And given how many awful coaches have been hired over the years (all men), it seems absurd to eliminate 50 percent of the population from any candidate pool simply because they’re female.  Who knows if the next Vince Lombardi might be named Helen or Barbara?

Hence, your question today is to consider–and then answer–the following question(s):

1. Will there ever be a female NFL head coach? (Bonus points are given for answers that elaborate on the conditions for such a hire and predictions as to when it might happen)

2. Which pro sport/league will be the first to hire a woman as the head coach or team manager? (Bonus points are given for answers that explain why another sport–non-NFL–would be more likely to see a woman in this role)

If you want to get into more controversial territory, feel free to address any concerns about inherent gender differences that could preclude (or prevent) such advancement. Moreover, it’s probably essential to address pro sports as fertile grounds for misogyny. How would young men react to being supervised (coached) by a woman?

This is my latest question posted in the A.U.C. Facebook series that I launched in 2020 which is intended to foster civil discussion and debate. Please join us at the link below and share your opinion.
