Why do so many people vote Republican, when they oppose almost everything we believe in?
HELP ME OUT HERE, BECAUSE I DON’T GET IT
“If I polled my Republican contacts, they would be against what the GOP stands for right now, by a wide majority. The numbers wouldn’t even be close.”
I just don’t get it. Maybe someone out there reading this can explain things to me. Please keep your explanation simple. Explain it to me like you’re speaking to a small child.
Many people I know — and I do know many people — refer to themselves as conservatives. Many of these people say they’re Republicans. I’m fine with that.
What I don’t understand is this:
The overwhelming majority of people I know — including Republicans — express their support for the following things:
— Women’s reproductive freedom
— An individual’s right to medical privacy
— Equal rights for gay people (I don’t think I know anyone who opposes this)
— Legalization of marijuana (and the decriminalization of some drugs)
— Government efforts to slow down the effects of man-made climate change and help save the environment
— Raising the federal minimum wage
— Some basic standard of health care for all Americans
— Protecting our Social Security and Medicare
— Civil rights and voting rights for everyone
— Some gun restrictions (background checks, ban on assault weapons, etc.)
— Infrastructure spending (public works projects, mass transit, etc.)
— Keeping religion out of government
Moreover, the overwhelming majority of people I know — including most Republicans — also recognize Donald Trump (the most popular figure in the Republican Party right now) as a dangerous, unhinged, dishonest, truly loathsome individual who poses a grave threat to American democracy. Deep in their hearts, they know he’s a fraud. They also would be hard-pressed to stand next to Mitch McConnell or Lindsey Graham or any of the other Republican leaders for more than a few seconds before the gag reflex prevails.
I can’t prove this, of course. But I know that if I polled my Republican contacts, they would be PRO-CHOICE….be for GAY RIGHTS….favor MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION, be ENVIRONMENTALISTS and ANIMAL RIGHTS supporters, be for RAISING THE MINIMUM WAGE, be for MEDICARE FOR ALL, be for INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS all across America, and be against radical right-wing religious extremists from imposing their narrow view of the world on American democracy. By a wide majority. The numbers wouldn’t even be close.
So, given the honest opinions of many people who still insist they’re Republicans, despite elected Republicans and Republican candidates almost universally OPPOSING EVERY ONE OF THESE THINGS, how and why are they still voting for Republicans???
This makes no sense.
It’s preposterous. It’s hypocritical. It’s self-defeating. It’s insanity.
