Why Are Food Delivery Services So Popular?

QUESTION: WHY ARE FOOD DELIVERY SERVICES SO POPULAR?

Honest question here. I’d like an explanation from people who know more about this than me.
Confession: I’ve *never* used any of the major food delivery services before. Not ever. UberEats, DoorDash, etc. Never tried them.

My anti-food delivery reasons are simple. I dine out 5-6 times a week, sometimes more if we eat two major meals in a day. I’m picky about the quality of my food. I sure as hell want my food hot, fresh, and most of all — accurate. If there’s ever a mistake in a sit down restaurant, it can be corrected immediately on the spot. This is *not* the case with food delivery.

When I think of UberEats and DoorDash, aside from utter bewilderment, here’s what comes to mind:

– IT’S GAMBLING (we have no idea if the order was placed accurately, or something’s missing). Opening up the bag is more uncertain than shooting craps.

– COLD FOOD (the last thing I want is food that was prepared 45 minutes ago, took another 15 minutes to pick up, then sat in the back seat of a car while he driver made other deliveries or jacked off on his break, and then by the time your order arrives–its past the expiration date). Fuck that!

– COSTS (the menu is usually the same with food delivery as sit down dining. Why would I pay the same price for stuff served out of a plastic box?) I’ve even seen idiots who paid $50 for a steak to be delivered. WTF?  Quick Edit: Several people in the comments (Facebook) informed me delivery pricing is actually higher than in-house dining.

– SHIT PLATES AND CHEAP UTENSILS (this is related to the previous point, but I don’t care how great the restaurant is–it doesn’t taste as good in a styrofoam container.)

– TIPPING (I have to tip the driver/delivery person…..tipping waiters generously for good service is fine, but must I tip roughly the same amount for the guy who shows up in a 15 year old Hyundai and smells like weed?)
I will amend one thought and statement. I have used pizza delivery services in the past. For some reason, pizza travels pretty well. Maybe it’s the cardboard box. And, most of the time they don’t fuck up or make mistakes with pizza. Even Dominos usually gets it right.

Aside from work-related deliveries and special circumstances, why would ANYONE use a food delivery service EVER? I really want to know.

I might be persuaded with constructive counter-arguments, but it baffles me that anyone would regularly use food delivery services, unless it’s an emergency.

  1. Delivery services are for when you are hammered and should not be driving. That said, it should only be used for food that has a pretty low bar. Getting a steak delivered is a waste of money.
