What Should Be Taught in Schools That Currently Isn’t?

high-school

Question:  What subject is the most important topic/issue that IS NOT CURRENTLY being addressed and should become part of the foundation of every child’s education?

What’s the single most neglected subject/topic/lesson that isn’t taught in most public schools that should be a mandatory part of every student’s curriculum?

I’ve been thinking a lot about public education lately and have serious concerns about what students might be losing due to stay-at-home learning and in some cases, social isolation. This isn’t a debate about that controversial issue, but the recalibration of our thinking as to how education is managed could produce some unanticipated positive changes.

Think of all the subjects kids are taught in schools (and what we learned in school) — including Maths, English, Science, History, and so forth. I think most of us will agree those basic foundations of learning are vitally important and shouldn’t be disregarded.

I’m asking what subject is the most important topic/issue that IS NOT CURRENTLY being addressed and should become part of the foundation of every child’s education? I won’t give away examples because I’d like to read comments from readers and gain my own perspective. I have my own idea which I shall post later. But first, it’s your turn.

Note that your answer can address children of any age or grade level. You are tasked with picking the issue and get bonus points for explaining what age/grade is optimal. Obviously, first graders are much different than high school seniors and you must pick and choose the most important target.

It would really be great to hear from teachers, administrators, academics, and those in the field, but being a parent probably gives one just as clear a perspective into what’s missing in conventional education.

I’m looking forward to an interesting discussion. I hope you have enjoyed this series (“An Unconventional Convention” — 14 months and still going strong), so far. Please participate as the more comments shared help everyone to gain a broader perspective.
