What movie best conveys what the future will be like?

That’s the question of the day, posted in my latest Facebook discussion.

Since movies began, we’ve peered into our collective destiny and been given fleeting glimpses of the future. Some of these portraits are utopian. Others are apocalyptic. Some films portray life as it’s imagined just a few years from now. Others show what the world may be like in the next century, or millennium.

Your objective in this latest edition of A.U.C. is to select the movie that is likely to become closest to reality. You may post one film, or make a list. Most interesting of all would be your opinions as to why the film(s) you select are most likely to show what life will be like in the future.

Naturally, this is an expansive topic. A film that takes place ten years from now (in 2033) is far more likely to reflect realistic expectations than a futuristic film set a thousand years from now (in the year 3022).

As evidence of the beginnings of futurism in film, recall the masterpiece from German cinema, Metropolis, released in 1927. That film turned out to be remarkably accurate in portraying life (now) nearly a century later.

So, what’s your pick? Name the movie that (you believe) best conveys what our future will be like.

This is the ONE-HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-FIRST edition of A.U.C., a Facebook series intended to foster civil discussion, debate, and greater understanding. Thanks to everyone for participating.
