The Trump Insurrection One Year Later

“What I remember is (President Trump) watching on his TV, as he often did, saying ‘look at all those people fighting for me!,’ hitting rewind and then watching it again.  That’s what I know.”

— Stephanie Grisham (former White House Press Secretary)

Exactly one year ago on this day, a raging mob of maniacal traitors and deranged cultists loyal to disgraced, twice-impeached President Donald Trump, invaded the United States Capitol Building and not only disrupted the Senate in session which was performing its constitutional responsibilities.  The angry mob also stormed through the building determined to make “citizens arrests” and murder senators, congressmen, and even lynch sitting Vice President Mike Pence. At least five people were killed, property damage soared into the tens of millions, and for the first time in more than 200 years, the nation’s capital was directly under siege — not from a foreign invasion as in the War of 1812, but from domestic terrorists.

Let’s be clear, these domestic enemies were clearly encouraged and perhaps even orchestrated behind the scenes by insurrectionists within the Trump Administration, including perhaps the sitting lame-duck president himself.  The evidence is overwhelming and damning.

It’s shameful this insurrection wasn’t met with the force that clearly would have been justified. In any other nation, a wild mob completely out of control invading the hallowed halls of power and keeper of so many proud traditions, overtly threatening to kill leaders, would have been quickly confronted with deadly armed force and instantly repelled. My personal view is that any traitor who breached the U.S. Capitol and entered illegally should have met with the strongest armed response possible. And, all intruders who broke into the House and/or Senate chambers should have been shot on-site, no questions asked.

And yet one year later, these enemies aren’t merely still among us. Now, they are empowered and as strong and as dangerous as ever.  Millions of Trumpsters drunk on the toxins of an alternative universe Koolaid brewed up by the far-Right media goblins, swallow the lies and fire breath wacko conspiracy theories.  Shuddering at the whims and mercy of a mass moron mob of millions, virtually every elected Republican leader wants the Jan. 6th investigation to completely disappear. Virtually every Trump Administration lackey has stonewalled the release of critical internal information and refuses to testify. Virtually every Republican still clings to the lie of a “stolen election” and cowardly sits by while their once-noble party devolves into a political cult ruled by a narcissistic madman. Republicans would be comical if they weren’t so pathetic.

Meanwhile, let’s give praise where it’s rightly deserved. In today’s official remembrance inside the House of Representatives, ONE lone congresswoman showed up along with most Democratic members. Even more impressive, her father stood by her side on the House floor. That lone Republican congresswoman who attended today’s session was Lynne Cheney (R-WY) and her father by her side was Vice President Dick Cheney. While he was in office, I was the furthest thing from a supporter of Cheney and his failed neoconservative creed. But let’s give proper credit where it’s due. Seeing the two Cheney’s standing side by side for decency was a brave thing and a glaring reminder of just how far the rest of the Republican Party has fallen off a cliff and into the abyss of mass delusion. Too bad they stood alone.

DO NOT FORGET who truly stands with democracy and the constitution, and who mouths air and then cowers in silence when their voices are so desperately needed the most.
