The Power of Aspiration

“You can’t change the world, your country, your state, your city, your community, or even your family. But you can change yourself.”

I’m an aspiring writer. I aspire to write. To communicate. To share. To inspire. To teach. To learn. To enjoy.

I’m not there yet. Reading the greatest writers, I recognize the vast abyss between where I am now, and what I aspire to be. That gap is unlikely ever to be bridged. But the leap of faith in myself and curiosity about the world and my attempts to write about it will make for a far more satisfying failure than never to have tried.

I aspire to be a better writer. A better citizen. A better husband. A better neighbor. A better friend. A better worker. A better example for others.

I can’t imagine going through life, short as it is, and not trying to write. To sing. To play a musical instrument. To draw. To paint. To try and find that ONE THING that you wake up for and were meant to do.

So, you can’t write? Who cares? Try. You can’t sing? Put aside your fear. Sing. You can’t play a musical instrument? You’re never too old to learn.

Doing something you love isn’t a quest for perfection. Forget about being the best. Stop worrying about winning. That’s not what happiness is about. We’ve become poisoned by competition and comparisons. We’re a society with grotesquely misplaced priorities. And we suffer the terrible consequences of it.

You can’t change the world, your country, your state, your city, your community, or even your own family. But you can do this. You can change YOURSELF. You are in control. Nobody else. YOU.

That’s my thought for the day.

  1. You forgot Dance. I can’t dance and I was always shy about trying. Then I read something I wish I had seen years ago: “No one cares how you dance. Just get up and move!”

      Good addition. Ammend.
