60 Years of Oscar Winners (1955-1979)

60 YEARS OF OSCARS:

WHAT MOVIES WON VS. WHAT MOVIES SHOULD HAVE WON?

PART 1 OF 3 (1955-1979)

Sorry to say, I’ve lost much of my interest and most of my affection for Academy Awards. Has any cultural institution become so utterly uninteresting and embarrassingly lacking in social significance?

Indeed, I lament the decline of Oscar night — coming up next weekend — with a deep personal sadness. It used to be one of my favorite nights of the year. For most of my life, I loved the Oscars. But for many reasons, which I may write about later, the Academy Awards just don’t mean much to me anymore.

Still, that doesn’t change traditions and a fascinating history that’s not only been controversial many times, but has also reflected who we are and what society aspires to, sometimes in the most embarrassing fashion.

Let’s take the “BEST PICTURE” winner each year. What follows is this: I’ll give my opinion not only on if the Oscar winner stands up over time, but also comment on what movie from that same year should have won. I’ve also included some of the “underappreciated” films that deserved more nominations and awards and were overlooked at the time.

Let’s go in chronological order and see where you agree, or disagree–and please feel free to do so!:

Who We Really Are (Robert Duvall R.I.P.)

WHO WE REALLY ARE

Robert Duvall died today. He was 95. I don’t know of any actor (or public figure) who looked pretty much the same as they appeared 64 years ago. Consider this image from the 1962 movie, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” one of Duvall’s first film roles. Add a few wrinkles and sun spots, and this could just as easily be Duvall in his final film scene. His voice may have been a little scratchier with age, but it otherwise remained unchanged.

But this is about something deeper and more meaningful — what’s on the inside.

“Put That Coffee Down!”

Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) is airing tonight on TCM. I’ll tape it — then watch it later.

GGR is one of those special-treat movies where I always full-stop and record and watch at least once every couple of years. Like many of you reading, I too have a few dozen movies in that special category of guilty treats. It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve seen them before, I’ll watch one of these movies again. Even though most of the dialogue was committed to memory long ago, I still get something out of a repeat viewing every time. Don’t ask me why, I can’t explain.

A Great Man Among a Few Good Men

A GREAT MAN AMONG A FEW GOOD MEN

Many of us grew up with Rob Reiner. We were raised with so many of his memorable characters–both in front and behind the human mirror known as the camera. We evolved with his nearly unmatched direction of so many wonderful films, and for people like me who will always be politically- and socially-minded — by his ceaseless devotion to causes much bigger than himself. One scene at a time, we matured along with Rob Reiner’s indelible movie and television portrayals, his unique insights shone through words and emotions, and his astounding cavalcade of side-splitting comedy dating back more than half a century. Individually and collectively, he helped to make us who we are.

Tears in my eyes, my voice crackling with emotion — THANK YOU Rob Reiner.

Robert Redford

ROBERT REDFORD

What a life……adventurous, insightful, inspiring, unpretentious, and purposeful.

Like so many, I grew up with Robert Redford films — both which he starred in and directed. It would be hard to pick a favorite, especially considering the indelible impact on movies and culture left by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Way We Were, The Sting, Jeremiah Johnson, The Candidate, All the President’s Men, Ordinary People, and so many others.
