Dallas’ Darkest Cloud: Growing Up in the Shadows of the Kennedy Assassination

Today marks the 56th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.  Some 19 months before that tragic day, I was born in Dallas.  My family lived in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas.  That’s where Lee Harvey Oswald resided and was ultimately captured after committing one of the most infamous murders in history.  Today’s column reveals what life was like growing up in the shadows of the Kennedy Assassination.

Movie Review: Chasing the Moon

Now approaching the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 space mission, get ready for a bombardment of well-intended but predictable homages and historical remembrances to humanity’s greatest technical achievement.  However, one documentary towers above the rest.  The latest episodes “American Experience” on PBS take a familiar story you may think you already know and add some unexpectedly compelling twists and turns — making this the best documentary of the year.  In short, watching “Chasing the Moon” is a blast.

It seems like a century ago.  I was there in the hall that night at the Dallas Convention Center during the 1984 Republican National Convention when Ray Charles belted out the greatest of all odes — “America the Beautiful.”  What a gorgeous melody and memorable moment.
