Summerlin Art Festival (2013)

Art reflects who we are.

Art can be anywhere and made of anything — created by anyone.

Art inspires and unites us.

Art is the universal language of human expression.

Summerlin Arts Festival 2

This past weekend, we attended the Summerlin Art Festival (October 12-13).  The annual event is held outdoors in a park across the street from the Red Rock Casino.  It’s free and open to the public.  Hundreds of artists participate.  Thousands come and enjoy.

I like to show things like this.  Lots of people, especially those who reside elsewhere, think Las Vegas is all about casinos and gambling.  But there’s so much more here, as you can see.

I took several photos on this day, most of the sidewalk chalk drawings.  As you will see from the photos some of these drawings are magnificent!

Look at the amazing amount of detail in the artwork above.  Remember, it’s made with chalk!

Some of these chalk drawings were very clever and included thought-provoking messages.

For example, I learned that one of the artists is a big believer in animal rights.  She opposes the commercialization of animals for human consumption.  Here’s a wonderful expression of that belief (above), manifested in caged chickens dreaming of a better life.  One has to admire her passion and creativity.

Isn’t this the essence of art?

The Summerlin Arts festival also includes a large area for vendors, those who come to sell their artwork.  Perhaps 140-150 artists bring all kinds of things for viewing and for sale.  There’s something here for just about everyone on any budget.

I’m not exactly sure what this is supposed to be (above).  It’s all in the eye of the beholder.  Use your imagination.  The colors sure are pretty.

Here’s another more traditional portrait, which you might expect to see on a canvass in a museum.  Note how interesting the black and white appears to be, in contrast to the vibrant colors in some of the other chalk drawings.

Some art is not quite so serious.  After all, art can also be fun.  Who can resist a smile and seeing some of these joyous creations?

Everyone seemed to enjoy the day.  Even our furry friends below.

Here’s another awesome drawing.  The colors and attention to detail are magnificent!

Art has no age limit.  Young, old, and in between — anyone can do it, or at least try.

So nice to see our local community encourage younger artists who were given their own age category.  Some of these young people have some real talent!

As we departed the Summerlin Art Festival this year, this was one of the final artworks we saw, in the Under-9 age category.  I think this kinda’ says it all.
