Poker: Past, Present, and Future

poker-news

Poker may well be on the verge of another golden age.

It’s possible.

I’ll tell you more about why I think this is so in an upcoming announcement, which I think will excite a lot of people.

In the meantime, I’ve enjoyed several notable features in the media about my personal involvement in the game, as well as what’s ahead for poker.

Permit me to give readers a little background on each of the following news stories which all appeared in the last week:

POKER NEWS

“Nolan Dalla Asks, Has Poker Become Unbeatable?”

I can’t begin to tell you how much respect I have for this organization and its staff.  Secretly, I was hoping to get asked to contribute a column occasionally, and that’s what happened thanks to writer-editor Peter Alson who pushed me forward to pen a monthly opinion piece.  This article came to me pretty quickly and seeks to answer questions about just how tough casino and online poker have become, and what’s ahead for the future.  I’m not sure I have all the answers.  No one does.  But all answers begin with asking questions, even tough questions like this one.  I can’t wait to start slamming on some softballs and tackling some big issues.  I actually feel sorry for whoever has to edit my stuff.

CARDPLAYER MAGAZINE

NO LINK:  PICK UP A COPY OF THE LATEST CARD PLAYER

Frankly, I’m pretty bored with myself, which is why I like to write.  I get to do new things and explore different topics when I’m pecking away at a keyboard.  I’m not exactly camera-shy, but I also don’t go out of my way to seek media attention.  For many reasons, I’ve had only a few features done on me over the past 20 years.  Until very recently, I turned most of them down because I didn’t want the spotlight.  The real focus should be on who I work for and the things I do.  Plus, I might say something that will piss a lot of people off.  Julio Rodrguez has had my respect for a very long time.  When he asked me to be profiled in Card Player Magazine, I accepted largely because I know Julio would be asking some cool questions.  There’s also some irony to having written 200+ columns for Card Player over the years and finally being the subject of an article for the first time.  Oh, and another thing.  Card Player wants me back as a columnist, which I think I’ll accept.  First, the Shulmans have always been straight with me which I like, and plus, this was my very first writing gig 21 years ago.  Oh, and I get to share a byline with Julio.

POKER NIGHT IN AMERICA

“Night Movies:  Poker Night in America is Coming to a TV Near You in 2014”

As the Creative Director for an exciting new television show, we’ve been intentionally keeping a low profile these past few months, because we are working on something really, really big.  A really big shew.  I’m not teasing anyone here, just letting you know that you better get used to hearing “Poker Night,” because I am working towards making this a real game-changer.  Todd Anderson is the real mastermind, who created the Heartland Poker Tour.  He hired me and basically said, “do your thing.”  Wow.  This is better than being a bartender.  Well, we are finally at the point where some things are about to explode.  Justin Simon at “All In” was interested in getting the breaking story in this, and we gave him a sneak peek and what’s ahead.  Justin wrote and published this article last week, which quotes Todd and me.  Trust me on this — we’ve got some big news coming up.

WORLD SERIES OF POKER

2014 World Series of Poker Home Page

The WSOP always will be a special place to me, and I’m looking forward to working the 2014 series and beyond for many years.  This summer, I will see many of you who are reading and following what I do, so please do come by and say hello.  Sometimes, I get asked how the WSOP allows me to get away with writing what I do at this website, to which I reply, “hell if I know.”  Anyway, it says a lot about the fine people I work with and their open-minded attitudes towards accepting all kinds of ideas and feedback that I’m still a part of the most elite team in poker.

  1. Nolan: I was a little blue when I read your article about Poker becoming unbeatable or stagnant. So now I am feeling much better about things because you are so upbeat! Please hurry up with Poker Night and let us celebrate with you. Great articles – glad we will hear more from you.

  2. Keep on writing – your the very best !

  3. Poker may be on the verge of a new golden age? I am still looking for the evidence of that on the horizon. Being unbeatable is evidence it has bottomed out. Good luck with the new TV show. May it lead to Sheldon Adelson’s conversion and a Democratic majority in the House.
