U2 ON FREMONT STREET IN LAS VEGAS (FILMING “I STILL HAVEN’T FOUND WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR”)

Note: Continuing my tribute to Las Vegas and its colorful history on this the 20th anniversary of my relocation, here’s a look at some of the most memorable moments in pop culture which happened here.

The song is a feeling that most of us have shared at one time or another in our lives. Maybe more than once. After graduation. Following a breakup. After losing a job. Even upon retiring from a long career. Its message about searching for something is timeless but hopeful. It applies and appeals to everyone.

Are Casinos Making the Inequity Gap Worse?

The rise of one casino and the fall of three others is called “progress.”  Perhaps in some ways, this is true.  But what will later become of those soon-to-be vacant lots?  How will that change the way we think of those “other” areas of town?

2022 NFL Analysis and Picks — Final Report (Week 5)

The “best seat in the house” award goes to Noah Carbone for his view a few weeks ago in Miami.  Here’s his view from Dolphins-Bills game last week.  In previous weeks, I posted Scott Byron and Bruce Kramer pics, which were lousy end-zone seats in New York and Philadelphia.  Noah Carbone laughed, announced, “raise,” and sent me this pic/view.

As for my analysis and picks, I hope you enjoy the weekly write-ups.  Continuing with this week’s analysis and predictions, two weeks, I ended up with another solid effort with 8 wins and 3 losses, for a nice win of $930.  Last week I visited my mother in Dallas and took a break from betting action.

LAST WEEK’S RESULTS:

No Plays.

Now, it’s on to NFL Week 5.

Review: Randy’s Donuts (Las Vegas)

randy's donuts las vegas

Even if you don’t know the name “Randy’s Donuts,” you’ve probably still seen the gigantic marquis atop each of their donut shops in Los Angeles.

Flying out of LAX, the smog is too thick to see the “Hollywood” sign off in the distance. But that monster cement donut perched upon the rooftop on West Manchester Blvd. in Inglewood -since 1953 when the flagship store initially opened- remains a quirky LA institution all these years later and is still an irresistible 24/7 temptation. That might be the most famous donut in America — and maybe even the world.

2022 NFL Analysis and Picks — Final Report (Week 4)

First, here’s a photo taken by my longtime friend Bruce Kramer, who attended last Monday night’s Philadelphia Eagles-Minnesota Vikings game.

I decided that I’m going to try something new with photos.  Whenever possible, I’ll use snapshots from my friends who attend NFL games and post pictures directly from their seats (with their permission, of course).

As for my analysis and picks, I hope you’re enjoying the weekly write-ups.  Continuing with this week’s analysis and predictions, last week, I ended up with another solid effort with 8 wins and 3 losses, for a nice win of $930.

My Stadium Seat at the 1970 Dallas-Detroit Playoff Game

The Best Worst Seat in the House

Today, I went back and located the seat where I sat when I attended my first professional football game in December 1970.

The Detroit Lions played the Dallas Cowboys at the Cotton Bowl.  The Cowboys won an epic defensive struggle 5-0.  That really was the final score of the game, as the only scoring included a field goal and a safety.

Here’s a look back at some of the highlights of that game (and they were few — see the shortest highlight reel ever):

Nearly 52 years later, I visited the famed Cotton Bowl stadium today and located my seat.  It’s a funny story, since I was only 8 years old at the time, and ended up sitting in the worst seat in the house. But I got to see an NFL playoff game!

Here’s the video and story (3 mins):
