S&D Oyster Company (Restaurant Review)
This is my mother’s favorite restaurant. We go to S&D Oyster Co. each time I visit. It’s a carbon copy of the best New Orleans cuisine, and certainly the best I’ve tasted anywhere outside of Louisiana. If you visit, be sure and ask for the outdoor patio garden seating in the rear. Crowded in evenings which is why lunch is recommended.
A little bit of trivia: Actor Owen Wilson used to wait tables here.

Today’s brunch:
1. Six Oysters in the half shell with Tabasco and horseradish, each on a Saltine Cracker.
2. Cup of Creole Gumbo.
3. French bread, real butter.
4. Finely-chopped Cole Slaw with Cayenne pepper.
5. Hand-cut French Fries.
6. Rainbow Trout perfectly fried in delicious corn meal. 2 hush puppies. (homemade tartar on the side)
7. Two Rum Runners.

I’m not sure what Mother ordered. My face has been buried in food for the last 45 minutes.
10/10

Though I have no regard for religion or the Catholic Church today, I don’t run away from my part connections and memories. On this trip, I returned to the first school I attended in Dallas.

PRESIDENT G.W. BUSH’S OVAL OFFICE PHONE
Some readers may be surprised by my visit this afternoon to the George W. Bush Presidential Library on the SMU campus in Dallas. This isn’t the time or place for partisan politics and so I’ll write more about my overall impressions of the library later on, along with lots more photos.

Here’s Rebecca Schmitz (my mom) back at her old stomping grounds at South Oak Cliff.
This picture was taken today, six decades after being the prettiest girl in the senior class. SOC is where my Mom and Dad went to high school in the late 1950s.
The most famous South Oak Cliff graduate is Dennis Rodman, aka “the Worm.”
In fact, South Oak Cliff won the Texas high school state championship in football in 2021 and 2022, which is a stunning achievement given how competitive high school sports are in Texas. That this a smaller public school from the “other side of the tracks” won state football championships back to back is something that probably deserves a movie script. Go, Golden Bears!
But my two champions will always be my mom and dad.

BRISKET TACOS ARE SERVED!
Tonight’s Mexican feast — soft corn tortillas filled with beef brisket, sauteed with onions and tomatoes. Served with rice, pico de gallo and charro beans. Salad and fresh guacamole. All for $14.95….along with an astounding margarita (okay, 2) with hand squeezed lime juice as the mixer.
Stupendous. Next to a tortilla factory in Oak Cliff. Family owned and run.

CLYDE BARROW (BONNIE AND CLYDE)
The most interesting, maybe bizarre, thing about visiting Clyde Barrow’s grave today, located here just west of Downtown Dallas is the fact that nearly a century after he was machine gunned to death, the notorious bank robber is still getting flowers. Real flowers.
And they say crime doesn’t pay.
Well, at least Clyde isn’t resting alone.

Here’s my latest article on NBA Playoffs betting, which could apply to any sports wagering situation. The host site is betcoin.ag.
The subject here is gut feel and instinct versus line movement in the opposite direction. My conclusion is this:
“When a team shows you who they really are — listen and learn (and then make the bet!)”
