USA! USA! USA! — Oh Please, Just Shut Up

“USA! USA! USA!” …. OH PLEASE, JUST STOP

Back in 1976, I was 14. My father took me to an international track and field competition. It was held inside the Fort Worth Convention Center. Team USA faced TEAM USSR in a 3-day mini-Olympics. Track and field, pole vaulting, gymnastics, and all the usual sports were displayed. Despite the USA and USSR being intensely at odds on the global political stage, in sporting competition the mood was very different. The crowd of several thousand, almost all Americans and overwhelmingly Texans, cheered when the athletes from the Soviet Union did something spectacular. Sure, we were all cheering for our fellow Americans. Yet, our *guests* merited respect. They also deserved praise when they won or accomplished something big.

Farm Aid 2025

FARM AID 2025…..
SOCIALISM IN THE HEARTLAND…..
AND THE LAST LEAF ON THE TREE…

Late Saturday night, I tuned in and caught most of Willie Nelson’s one-hour set. Farm Aid 2025 was broadcast live from Minneapolis. The concert was shown start to finish on CNN. As has been his annual custom for four decades now (and counting), the beloved music legend closed out the latest chapter of Farm Aid with poignant songs and sentimental memories. It was the perfect close to a perfect day that blended hope, music, fun, and even a bit of chaos into an 11-hour benefit concert in support of America’s struggling farmers. Note: More about their “struggles” coming in a moment.

Robert Redford

ROBERT REDFORD

What a life……adventurous, insightful, inspiring, unpretentious, and purposeful.

Like so many, I grew up with Robert Redford films — both which he starred in and directed. It would be hard to pick a favorite, especially considering the indelible impact on movies and culture left by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Way We Were, The Sting, Jeremiah Johnson, The Candidate, All the President’s Men, Ordinary People, and so many others.

Recently, Facebook friend and music publicist Mitchell Schneider posted an old album review he wrote up for Crawdaddy, a monthly newsprint-style magazine published 1966-1979. Anyone remember that? It was such a great resource for all things musical.

I hadn’t thought about Crawdaddy in many years. Luckily, Mitchell sent me a link with old archives of the back issues, and of course I dived down the rabbit hole.

Free Expression vs. Accountability

QUESTIONS ABOUT FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND EXPRESSION….VERSUS THE CONSEQUENCES OF OUR ACTIONS

I’ll try to frame this in a very generic way. By that I mean, trying to stay — apolitical. There’s no intended bias, nor defense of any particular ideology, nor the advance of another.

Assuming you’re rational and logical and can argue a point without emotion, you should be able to ponder larger questions and perhaps also offer constructive engagement. At least, that’s what I’m hoping for.

Here we go….

Thoughts on the Shooting

Aside from the moral and ethical questions on politically-targeted violence, in the most self-serving Machiavellian sense, the real lunacy with violent acts –including assassinations of public figures– is that they often produce the unintended consequence of elevating the profile of the victim. Violent acts usually backfire in terms of generating sympathy and popular support. If you’ve never heard of the victim before, well you’ve heard of him now. Who knows how many future book deals that’s worth or how many speaking engagements he’s going to enjoy, assuming he’s able to survive the ordeal.
