Patriotic Needles in Wacko Haystacks

cliven-bundy

Cliven Bundy should be imprisoned, and his estate auctioned off to settle his debts to taxpayers, and if anyone stands in the way and is armed — then make arrests and open fire, if necessary.  They are traitors, tax dodgers, and criminals.

There are lots of people out there with good intentions who are worried about what our government is doing.

Unfortunately, they often latch on to dangerous causes led by misguided fanatics.

Take the case of Cliven Bundy and his ongoing conflict with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), or more broadly — his fight against the federal government.  Incredibly, Bundy has been gaining plenty of support recently from good people who probably think they’re doing something patriotic.  But when you examine this case and his beliefs a little closer, what they’re really supporting is someone who is a traitor to this nation.

Should you doubt this, read on.  What would you call someone who has made the following public pronouncements:

“I believe this is a sovereign state of Nevada.  I abide by all of Nevada state laws.  But I don’t recognize the United States government as even existing.”  [1]

“We definitely don’t recognize [the BLM director’s] jurisdiction or authority, his arresting power, or policing power in any way,”  [2]

“What they have done is seized Nevada statehood, Nevada law, Clark County public land, access to the land, and have seized access to all of the other rights of Clark County people that like to go hunting and fishing.  They’ve closed all those things down, and we’re here to protest that action.  And, we are after freedom.  We’re after liberty.  That’s what we want.”  [3]

So, let me ask you again.  What would you call someone who made those public pronouncements, all of which are clearly documented?

I’ll go out on a limb here.  I’ll go so far as to say that someone who holds American citizenship, yet does not “recognize the U.S. government as even existing,” is either a political extremist, a deranged wacko — or perhaps both.

If you can justify this deadbeat rancher’s public comments, then by all means go ahead.  Please make a case for someone who was born here, holds citizenship, and is afforded all rights under the law, yet doesn’t even recognize the government.

I’m waiting.

Meanwhile, let me tell you what you should be doing instead.  There’s a mountain of evidence that suggests the federal government is doing lots of bad things that may be unconstitutional and/or illegal.  They’re doing things like detaining innocent people for long periods of time without being charged with crimes.  They’re listening to our phone calls and reading our e-mails.  They’re using drones to spy on us.  This is all being done under the pretense of “national security.”  Federal powers were broadened with the passage of the Patriot Act and a host of supporting amendments, which oddly enough enjoyed the strongest support among American conservatives.

That’s right, “conservatives.”  The so-called law and order crowd.

Now, many of those same self-described conservatives are openly championing a tax dodger and rallying behind someone who apparently believes he lives in a different country.

Indeed, fighting government abuse and the misuse of authority is a noble cause.  Just make sure you’re joining the right revolution.

  1. Most agree with you that this man has no conventional legal leg to stand on. The president should delay further prosecution until after the November election. The resulting shift of votes from the right could help us hold the senate and gain back the house.
