What Do All These Famous People Have in Common?
Let’s play a game.
Scroll down and look at each photograph.
There’s no rush.
Take your time.
You should be able to identify most people in these photos. If you don’t know a name, that’s okay. It’s written below each photograph.
Each of these famous people has something in common. A common link ties them together. I doubt if most of you will identify the common thread quickly, at least until close to the end, where the clues make the answer more obvious. See how long it takes you to figure it out.

All the people shown above were born in Texas.
Most of them grew up in the Lone Star State, as well. Of course, this is just a partial list. I picked out the faces that most would instantly recognize.
I like this kind of trivia question because it flies in the face of common stereotypes. Texas is often stigmatized by outdated images that don’t really apply to any of these people. I’m guessing that many of you were surprised to learn some of these people are native Texans.
Now, here’s a bonus question. What do the following people all have in common? Here’s a hint. It has something to do with Texas:
Jayne Mansfield — Legendary Film Actress
Janis Joplin — Singer and Music Legend
Neil deGrasse Tyson — Astrophysicist/Author/TV Personality
F. Murray Abraham — Academy Award Winning Actor (“Amadeus”)
Eli Wallach — Actor (“The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”)
Walter Cronkite — Journalist and CBS Anchorman
Matthew McConaughey — Actor
Rene Zellwinger — Academy Award Winning Actress
Farrah Faucett — Actress (“Charlie’s Angels”)
Owen Wilson — Actor
Marcia Gay Harden — Academy Award Winning Actress
Okay, this one is much tougher, isn’t it? I’m guessing fewer people figured out this trivia question.
Ready for the final answer?
All of the above people attended and/or graduated from the University of Texas.
Life is indeed full of surprises.

Though Kris Kristofferson was born in Texas, He graduated from Pomona College in California, where he was the Claremont Colleges ROTC Battalion Commander (The same ROTC Unit I attended two decades later). Before embarking on a short but successful Army Career as a highly decorated Airborne-Ranger who flew heliocopters in Vietnam, also studied Literature at Oxford on a Rhodes Scholorship (though he did not complete his degree).
Actually the URL kind of gave it away at once.
NOLAN REPLIES: Ooops. Note to self — Know what you intend to write about before listing the topic.
— Nolan
Inexplicably, you overlooked your big chance to put the 2006 BARGE Lazy Pineapple champion in both categories.
Sheesh, what a blunder…
NOLAN REPLIES: Tyson attended and earned his Masters from UT, which is all that is asserted in the article. I think the way the second question is posed is pretty clear for those who are paying attention.
