Every Picture Tells a Story: Yankee Stadium, New York (1979)

EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY:
YANKEE STADIUM (NEW YORK, NY) — 1979

I found another box inside my garage packed with hundreds of old photographs I haven’t looked at in years. Before I toss most of them away, in the coming weeks and months ahead, I’ll be sharing many of the most interesting images in this historical treasure trove and also tell the stories behind them, that is, if there is something interesting to share.

This photo was taken in December 1979. Around Christmastime, my dad and I rode the Amtrak Metroliner from Washington up to Grand Central Station and spent New Year’s Eve at Times Square in NYC. Pretty cool experience. My dad was great in so many ways, especially since he always took me to fun places, and I got to enjoy sites and experiences that really made an impact on me, especially for an 18-year-old with eyes opening to the world for the first time. From my own upbringing and those special times, I totally understand to this day why parents want to share travel experiences with their kids, particularly when children are old enough to comprehend what’s going on. I’m not being hyperbolic about it when I say these travel to new places and sharing of time experiences are the greatest gift a parent can give a child. Decades later, this memory remains a priceless gift. When I think of my father, I remember many trips like this one (and yeah. it’s not really much of a photograph–but it’s still Yankee Stadium in the Bronx in the 70’s!)

I only saw one ballgame at Yankee Stadium live in person, which was many years later, when I visited in 2005 I think it was. Soon thereafter, baseball’s most hallowed shrine was demolished by greed and replaced by some corporate-branded cookie cutter that has the audacity to still call itself “Yankee Stadium.” No, people. *This* was the real Yankee Stadium. There will be only one “House that Ruth built.”
