A Day in the Life
I received an e-mail from a loyal reader recently which contained some good advice. He made two suggestions for my blog.
First, he wanted to hear more poker and gambling stories. That’s a reasonable request. So, look for more stories in the near future.
Second, he suggested making my blog more personal by sharing things I do on a day-to-day basis.
I must admit the thought to reducing this site to some kind of sick twitter update — such as informing the world of what I ordered for lunch strikes me as ridiculously narcissistic and utterly immaterial. That said, I very much believe “who we are” is defined by “what we do.” So, I will acquiesce to this occasionally and bore the world with the trivialities of my personal life.
A DAY IN THE LIFE:
My typical day begins at 9 am. I usually go to bed around 2 am. That’s if I’m at home. If I’m on the road working or traveling, my schedule varies. Obviously, each day is different. But here’s what I do on most days:
9 am — Wake up….drink fresh cup of coffee made by Marieta (the coffee beans must be ground fresh — no coffee out of a can!)….Eat fresh cake/pastry made by Marieta (processed food not allowed in the house!)…..check e-mail….read Las Vegas Review-Journal
10 am — Exercise and run around The Lakes (three optional running routes ranging from 3 to 5 miles)….Marieta usually joins me and rides her bike
11 am — Shower followed by browsing Internet
Noon — Eat lunch (about half the time dine at a restaurant, other times Marieta always makes something fresh and delicious — No fast food ever!)
1 pm — Run personal errands (grocery store, dry cleaners, shopping, doctor appointments, Home Depot, etc.)
3 pm — Turn on CNN….browse Internet and check e-mail….Afternoon tea time
4 pm — Movie matinee (optional)….if staying home, enjoy afternoon cocktail made by Marieta (always served in 16-ounce steel tumbler!) / Sometimes visit casino sportsbook (wagering)
6 pm — Eat dinner (about half the time dine out at a restaurant, other times Marieta cooks a world-class meal)
7 pm — Attend show, a musical performance, social activity — if available.
10 pm — Watch TV, read books/magazines, browse Internet….Drink bottle of wine
Midnight — Write and work on various projects….Rant
2 am — Sleep
THE WEEK AHEAD:
Wednesday: Run 3 miles…..Lunch at Brio (Tivoli Village)….Take Alex (cat) to vet….Attend Wine Tasting (featuring South American Reds) at Rhythm Kitchen Restaurant (South Decatur — Las Vegas)
Thursday: Run 4 miles….Lunch at Mimi’s (best cheese broccoli soup in town served on Thursdays only)….Put up Christmas lights on outside of house….Attend CD Release Party featuring Lon Bronson All-Star Band and Tower of Power at Santa Fe Station (Northwest Las Vegas)
Friday: Run 5 miles…..Lunch at Panna Thai (Southwest Las Vegas)….See new movie “Skyfall”….Visit Opportunity Village Christmas Display (Oakey — West Las Vegas)….Late dinner with Glen Cademartori and Rich Korbin
Saturday: Bike 5 miles with Marieta…..See new movie “Lincoln”….Charity event at Italian-American Club….Visit sportsbook for NFL wagers….play poker at night (optional)
Sunday: Take mother-in-law to Romanian Orthodox Church….Watch NFL games (10 am – 4 pm)….Dinner at home
Monday: Run 3 miles….Attend Beer-Tasting Dinner at BJ’s (West Charleston — Summerlin)
Tuesday: Run 4 miles….Lunch at “M” Buffet (2 for 1 price)….Attend Wine Tasting at Carrabas Italian Grille (West Charleston — Summerlin)
Wednesday: Run 5 miles….Drive to San Diego, where I’m staying for the two weeks (World Series of Poker Circuit at Harrah’s Rincon)
THINGS I PLAN TO DO MORE:
Take guitar lessons (I play badly)
Play piano (I play very badly)
Attend more lectures (lots of free activities at UNLV, libraries, local bookstores)
Re-start “pilates” routine with Marieta (great exercise program, especially during winter months)

What are you…fucking retired? I don’t see how a guy who has mostly nothing to do AND is a poker player manages to get up at 9am in the fucking morning. Also, you talk about grounding fresh beans for your coffee, but don’t even mention the water…I hope you aren’t bothering to ground your beans and then using tap water….that’d be like buying a filet mignon, boiling it, and serving it with ketchup.
I’ll probably retire to vegas in a few years. I don’t plan on waking up before noon. I don’t know how you call yourself a gambler with those hours.
BTW, I don’t mean to be overly observant, but after looking at both your daily and weekly schedule, I gotta ask why you are posting a pic of yourself in business attire rather than the pair of sweats or jumpsuit you should be wearing?
I mean..you look halfway fucking presentable in that suit. Is that part of your act on the poker table…looking like some kind of business tourist target people want to victimize? I’m picturing the Sands in Rounders here where Matt Damon gives the piranha speech.
To the comments above,
Is it really all that bad to post a picture of yourself dressed up or would you truly like to see a picture of Nolan in boxers with an empty bottle of wine and a stained t shirt with fancy cracker crumbs on him at 1:33 am?
Sounds like a great life full of fun with a loving wife.. Geez, that’s gotta suck. And he gets to gamble too.. What a jerk….
And getting up at 9am!!! What an early bird!
NOLAN REPLIES:
