These are our true heroes. Many dedicated people whose names we shall never know. Faces are hidden behind surgical masks and protective shields. Reaching out with compassion and touching those most in need. Saving us on this side of a vast ocean from a deadly threat beyond our comprehension. These are the people who keep death at bay, while we cheer ballplayers and worship celebrities.

There’s no denying the Dark Ages linger. Atheists continue to endure a “sit in the back of the bus” existence. We’re not equals, nor are we treated as such. So deep is the pervasive fear of societal rejection, we’re still largely invisible within many communities. But we’re here, and in larger numbers, than you might think.

I browsed the magazine rack and was astonished to see a stunning number of gun, rifle, shotgun, and ammunition-related publications. No, this display isn’t at a gun show in Alabama. This was a bookstore in Summerlin, an upscale community in west Las Vegas.
