Unfit for Television: Review of Netflix Documentary about “The Biggest Loser”

“Beauty is only skin deep “

— an old fable

A new documentary about the once-controversial hit television show, The Biggest Loser now ranks as Netflix’s top program. Against my better judgement, I decided to watch it. To my surprise, I’m glad I did.

Titled Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser it’s a three-part series detailing the origin, rocketing rise in popularity, internal scandals, and ultimately the disgraced downfall of a reality television series that ran on NBC for 12 years. Billed as a weight-loss competition, the program spawned several copycat reality shows in other countries. Licensed “Loser”-themed merchandise even netted more than a billion dollars in profits worldwide, monies indirectly extracted from all the sweat, fat, pain, and vomit on full display each week branded as “family entertainment.” (yeah–several overworked contestants were shown vomiting during the show)

The Fart of the Deal / The Art of the Steal

THE FART OF THE DEAL AND THE ART OF THE STEAL

Stop calling it a “historic summit.”

There was nothing “historic” about any of it, other than the world witnessing the shameful spectacle of two power-mad dictators — one wickedly intelligent, coldly calculating, and consistent….the other woefully inept, simpleminded, and unstable — staging a pitiful photo op and quickie “press conference” on a American soil.

I’ve seen more substance come out of 15-minute meetings at my local Starbucks, even when they got my order wrong.

REVIEW: “LIVE AID” DOCUMENTARY (ON CNN)

If you’re 50+ (born in 1975, or earlier), you remember LIVE AID. Now, organizer/musician/activist Bob Geldof reveals the stories behind all the music, the mayhem, the madness, and the noble effort to do something and try and make a difference

Last month (July 2025) marked the 40th anniversary of the most grandiose spectacle in popular music history. In 1985, “LIVE AID,” a mega-rock concert played simultaneously across two continents and attracted the most stellar lineup of acts ever, tried to focus our attention on a faraway forgotten place with forgotten people amidst a mega-materialistic world obsessed with wealth and status. That LIVE AID took place at all in the “greed is good” eighties remains a peculiar twisted irony. Recently, CNN Entertainment wrapped up its documentary of Live Aid: When Rock ‘n’ Roll Took On the World, which reveals much of what happened offstage and when the mics were turned off — before, during, and after the duel rock concerts were held in London (UK) and Philadelphia (USA).
