The Fake Queen of Dairy

AN UNCONVENTIONAL CONVENTION — EDITION 186

What’s something you won’t ever do again after learning something bad about it?

Daily life is full of habits and the choices we make. Many of us are caught up in old habits that began early as children. And we continue to repeat those same choices throughout our lives. They become ingrained in what we do and who we are.

However, sometimes an event or something we learn later in life causes us to realize that choice is a bad one. We decide to no longer go along with an old familiar habit or an easy choice and vow to never do it again.

For some, this question might require deep thought. But it can also apply to the very simplest choices we make. Take my answer, for example.
Growing up mostly in the South, Dairy Queen was a big thing. There were Dairy Queens everywhere. Dairy Queen was one of the first fast-food takeout restaurants with a drive-thru, but their real claim to fame was soft serve ice cream. The dipped cones were addictive. The recipe was simple — vanilla “ice cream” was swirled into a cake cone, then double dipped in hot fudge. Viola! A trip to heaven for $.79 cents.

Later, when I moved to the Northeast, there were Dairy Queen copycats that served the same thing. So, my lifetime habit continued. A drive to Atlantic City each weekend always included two large dipped cones — one driving to Atlantic City and a second driving away from Atlantic City.

Then, I read someplace that DQ changed its recipe (actually it changed many years ago, but I didn’t know it). They went the cheaper route….“Technically, our soft serve does not qualify to be called ice cream,” Dairy Queen admits on its website. This was like being told there’s no Santa Claus.

No one thinks of a DQ cone as health food, but this stuff is 100 percent garbage. So, I’m now done with Dairy Queen, and all soft-serve “frozen treats” and won’t eat them again. It’s been nearly a year since I had one. There are plenty of real ice cream places out there that will get my business instead.

So, that’s *my answer* to the question: “What’s something you won’t ever do again after learning something bad about it?”

What’s yours? It doesn’t have to be about food, of course. It can be about ANYTHING.

This is the ONE-HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-SIXTH edition of A.U.C. Thanks to everyone for participating and making this a fun discussion.
