I noticed something recently that’s puzzling. Perhaps readers can offer some explanations.
It’s been three weeks now since Russia invaded Ukraine. The devastation has been brutal. Thousands have died. Hospitals have been targeted. Women and children have been attacked. And millions of refugees have flooded into Europe and elsewhere.
Facts: War crimes are being committed. Crimes against humanity are happening. Right now at this very second, incalculable suffering is happening.
Let’s be very clear, here — this is Putin’s War. The blood is on Putin’s hands.
Yet, on Facebook and elsewhere on social media I’ve noticed a DEAFENING SILENCE. That’s the only way to describe it.
A DEAFENING SILENCE.
Trump supporters, most Republicans, and many conservatives within my social circle have posted virtually NOTHING on Russia’s catastrophic invasion of Ukraine. This seems odd. These are the very same people who post their opinions on — well, just about everything.
Every day, and I do mean everysinglefuckingday, they share a thought. About world events. About what they think of government. Especially about things happening in the world. They post and share witless memes on every conceivable political controversy. All of this is usually wrapped in images of American flags and other patriotic themes, or Bible verses, or declarations about freedom.
That’s right, freedom — which only seems to matter to frightened, pearl-clutching conservatives who think their way of life, whatever that means, is under attack.
And now, at all the moments in time, most of them have gone gravely quiet. Make that totally silent. Not a post, nor comment, nor encouraging thought, nor even a word about Russia or Ukraine. Nothing even remotely in support of Ukraine and its MILLIONS of victims.
Therefore, I must ask: Are Trump supporters sympathetic to Putin?
What other conclusion is there to draw from this?
I took an informal survey of my own contacts, among people I know to be Trump supporters. With only a couple of rare exceptions, I’ve seen almost NO CRITICISM OF PUTIN OR RUSSIA. And those criticisms were minimal.
This isn’t simply an anecdotal anomaly or an accident. I also checked out several of the biggest pro-Trump Facebook groups, and they too are eerily quiet when it comes to Russia. (Read one example of their “explanation” for the war HERE)
Hmm. Interesting, huh?
Go look for yourselves. Check out the homepages of Trump supporters, Republicans, and dare I say “Evangelical Christians” I could provide countless examples, but just check out one abomination known as “Christians For Trump” with 442,000 Facebook followers and see if there’s a single post expressing either solidarity with Ukraine or expressing *any* sympathy for the victims of this war. Some “Christians,” huh?
The evidence on this is as damning as it is overwhelming.
Does anyone care to venture a guess as to WHY so many pro-Trump people are now so quiet about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine? Aside from blaming Biden for everything from wars to gas prices, of course — that’s always the shot they take. So why are there are almost ZERO posts now about fighting for freedom, cries to defend democracy, or saving innocent children?
Seriously. Really. I want to know.
