Who Most Deserves a Thorough Historical Revision?

AN UNCONVENTIONAL CONVENTION — EDITION 188

Name a famous person who deserves a thorough historical reexamination and revision.

This question is straightforward.

We’ve all grown up with *heroes.* However, sometimes later we learn many of the things they did, their statements, and what they truly believed in were not at all “heroic.” In fact, they were downright despicable.

There are some obvious cases of this. For instance, John Wayne may have been the most revered figure in American pop culture 50 years ago. “The Duke” wasn’t just a movie star. He was America personified. However, upon a closer examination of his life and lengthy career, we now see a far more disturbing portrait. Blatant racism, misogyny, and homophobia were John Wayne’s trademarks. Proudly so. He enthusiastically supported the horrific Vietnam War and made a ludicrous film that even promoted the big lie. In a 1971 interview, Wayne came right out and said, “I believe in white supremacy.” He called Midnight Cowboy (the 1970 Best Picture winner) “a story about two fags.” At the 1973 Oscars, Wayne reportedly had to be restrained from attacking a Native-American woman who went onstage to collect Marlon Brando’s Oscar for The Godfather. That’s quite a run there, Duke! Not exactly shocking stuff from the actor (in)famous for his fierce and lifelong opposition to every progressive cause.

You may choose anyone famous (living or deceased) — from movies, television, music, literature, art, or politics.

BONUS QUESTION: Pick a famous person who was/is viewed unfavorably right now (generally speaking), but also deserves a thorough historical reexamination and revision. In other words, the maligned person wasn’t as bad as perceived, and might even be construed as “heroic.”

This is the ONE-HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-EIGHTH edition of A.U.C., a series designed to promote civil debate and discussion. Thank you for participating.

  1. You can say that Wayne was a product of his time that failed to adapt to new times. People tend to only remember good about him, but he definitely wasn’t a knight in shiny armor a lot of people tend to remember his as.
