We Need the Affordable Care Act Now More than Ever

“Mark my words — if Republicans win control in 2022 and 2024, you will see the ACA destroyed.”

THANK YOU, PRESIDENT OBAMA

I was thrilled to see President Barack Obama back in the White House today for the first time since he left office. Today’s visit marked the 12th anniversary of the lifesaving AFFORDABLE CARE ACT, a progressive health care law supported almost exclusively by Democrats that has provided affordable health care to tens of millions of Americans, saved countless human lives, and prevented an untold number of personal bankruptcies due to high medical bills.

My only criticism of the ACA is that it didn’t go far enough. In fact, what we need is UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE. What we need is MEDICARE FOR ALL.

Despite a majority of Americans now in full support of the ACA (polls show that about 55-60 percent in favor, which is up 15 points since it passed and was signed into law — see it works!), Republicans have been determined to gut health care for Americans for more than a decade. They failed once, but the switchblades are still flying. Remember when the late Sen. John McCain in the famous “thumbs down” vote back in 2017 kept the ACA alive and undoubtedly saved millions from suffering and worrying about how to pay for their health care? McCain is gone now, and if Republicans get back in control of Congress, they’re gonna’ screw people sideways and upside down.

This impasse on health care illustrated the major difference between the two major parties. Even with their flaws, Democrats tend to get things done for working-class people. Meanwhile, Republicans remain the party of insurance firms, big banks, oil companies, and private prisons. Just last week, virtually all Republicans voted against decriminalizing marijuana (Democrats voted almost unanimously in favor). Republicans now try to blame President Biden for higher gas prices, while big oil companies reported RECORD PROFITS within the past year. Republicans block infrastructure improvements, even though our nation’s roads and bridges are crumbling, then they complain about the national debt (Clinton lowered the debt, Bush raised it, Obama lowered the debt, Trump raised it to record highs, and now Biden is lowering it again — see a pattern, folks?).

But hey, Republicans have stirred their dopey followers into a frenzy on the important issues that really matter: They have half the country believing that a transgender swimmer poses the biggest threat to America. Meanwhile, insurance companies, Big Pharma, banks, and the fossil fuel industry are skullfucking the brains out the American middle and lower classes up the ying-yang and whistling Dixie all the way to the graveyard. But yes–please–go ahead and post your mindless meme about “cancel culture” while Republicans attempt to fish gut Social Security and padlock childrens’ pediatric visits.

Mark my words — if Republicans win control in 2022 and 2024, you will see the ACA destroyed.

Thank you, President Obama. But our fight has only begun.
