Tea Party Veteran Protesters are the Real Hypocrites

Tea Baggers

Shut the government down, they all say.  And then when it does shut down, they bitch and protest.

Sometimes life really is stranger than fiction.

A lot of people claiming to be veterans got all pissed off last week.

As they rightfully should have been.  We all should’ve been óutraged that our federal government was shut down for 16 days.

Sadly, during an unsettling period of shouting and finger-pointing, some of these presumably concerned citizens made total jackasses of themselves.

I’m talking about “protestors” who stormed our national parks and monuments, claiming that since these federal lands belonged “to the people” they were dutifully entitled to special access when the rest of us (mere humble civilians) were not.

Hey, I’m as thankful for the veterans as anyone, probably even more so, than most.  But there’s a great deal of hypocrisy in who’s doing all the screaming and marching.  A generation or two ago, it was the old baffled at the young taking to the streets with banners and chants.  Now, it’s the reverse.  Young people are asking themselves, “are our elders losing the minds?”

Consider the absurd course of events.  First, the Tea Party wing of the Republican Party wanted the government shut down.  So, they finally got their wish.  The government shut down.  Then, they went out and protested the shutdown.  Qoud erat demonstrandum.

The spin on all this would be hilarious if it weren’t so mind-bogglingly illogical.  Look at what took place last weekend at the Valley Forge National Park.  Hundreds of so-called “patriots” stormed the entrance gates and demanded access to the park’s grounds and services.  At Valley Forge.

Hey, I’m sentimental when it comes to memorials and what they represent.  But Valley Forge?  If any of these alleged veterans had a personal stake in that military conflict, then by all means — let him in!  I can say this with some confidence that since no one was an actual veteran of that event — after all it took place sometime around 1777 and that would make him, err about 250-years-old, give or take — that no one in that looney bunch had any actual connection to the park.  Sorry, but being stationed for a couple of years on an Air Force base in Oklahoma doesn’t entitle you to jump over fences and “take back” your national park.

Fact is, these are little more than misguided political activists full of bitterness and confusion caught up in the latest hysteria about “losing our freedom” and “fighting for liberty.”  Read more NONSENSE about the Valley Forge protest here.

The Valley Forge incident is just a small part of a much bigger picture.  For those who haven’t followed what’s been happening politically in this country over the past six years or so, millions of older (mostly) White people are scared shitless that a younger Black man is now touching the White House china.  They can’t accept change, such a dirty word.  They think Blacks should be serving the dishes, not eating from them.  Their misguided fear makes them often say and do stupid things.  Like calling the POTUS interloper a “Socialist,” or a “Marxist,” or worse even — a “Muslim.”

Gasp!

I mistakenly thought the lies and disinformation would fade over time, that people would gradually come to their senses and accept the results of the democratic process — you know, something called an election.  But no.  Not only does the mudslinging continue, but it’s also now getting worse.  And now, what used to be called the “loyal opposition” is now actively engaged in a sort of political coup aimed at and strangling government.

Shut the government down, they all say.  And then when it does shut down, they bitch and protest.

Sometimes life really is stranger than fiction.

Note:  In tomorrow’s post, I’ll put up the latest political garbage from the Tea Party crowd.
