A Review of Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant (W. Flamingo/215, Las Vegas)
Eddie’s opened about two years ago. It’s a family-owned and operated casual eatery off 215 at the Flamingo exit, right next to the Las Vegas Athletic Club.
Like most local restaurants, Eddie’s has suffered some hardships from the shutdown. But now, they’re open for business and adhering to social distancing guidelines. Patrons are seated at least a table apart and servers wear masks.
I selected Eddie’s because it was high on my list to try. I’d not been here before but read (and heard) positive things. Online reviews are well above average.
Eddie’s is quintessential Tex-Mex food. It’s everything you’d expect in a local spot, with a nice variety of lunch and dinner combos and specials. Marieta and I each ordered a two-item combo, which comes with rice and beans. So, we enjoyed an enchilada and ground beef taco, with green sauce. Warm chips were refilled upon request. I especially liked the shredded iceberg lettuce on top. Many Tex-Mex places don’t serve the lettuce. It adds a nice texture to any dish.
The biggest positive about Eddie’s is the price. The simple combo is priced at $8.95, which is a steal. Similar quality and portions elsewhere are in the $10-13 range, which really makes me give this an enthusiastic thumbs up. Fancy — no. Serviceable and satisfying — yes.
Note that we enjoyed the lunch special, which is served M-F, 11 am to 3 pm. I presume the dinner portions are larger, but that wasn’t an issue. The lunch serving was filling and Marieta couldn’t finish her platter.
Service was equally efficient and impressive. Hostess was helpful and the waiter was very hands-on. I noted the staff cleans tables and booths extensively after each party leaves. So, the standards of hygiene are encouraging.
The only downside of our recent Eddie’s visit was the house margarita on the rocks. The mixer is one of those cheap concoctions that tastes like chemicals. A Mexican restaurant must serve a good margarita, and this was an embarrassing swing and a miss. It’s a pet peeve, but please — use a quality mixer and whip the ingredients into a froth. A stale yellow-colored margarita with no character nor pulp is boring. For $7.99 (nearly the cost of the lunch), the margarita should be much better than this. Take a hint from Juan’s Flaming Fajita’s nearby, which serves a silver margarita in a tumbler glass for $5 and is much better. Sorry, Eddie’s. Everything else was good. But the margarita needs a major overhaul.
I hope Eddie’s succeeds and prospers. Despite my criticism of the margarita, I still think we got a great deal and left satisfied. For dessert, we enjoyed an order of the puffy sopapillas, which are not easy to find made fresh. Overall, a very good experience. We plan to return.
Best thing to say about Eddies is the value. Hard to beat a delicious meal for under $10. Atmosphere and service were also very pleasant.
I recommend giving Eddie’s Mexican Restaurant a try.
