Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi just announced she’s stepping down as (majority/minority) leader, effective at the end of the current session of Congress. This is a wise decision with profound implications going forward. It’s a game-changer.
I’ve had deeply mixed feelings about Rep. Pelosi for many years. I admire her obvious love for and dedication to the history and traditions of the hollowed chamber she represents. I acknowledge her undeniable legislative talents. On a personal level, credit her amazing success as a self-made woman, balancing extraordinary pressures at home and in her political career.
On the other hand, I’ve also been highly critical of Rep. Pelosi’s moderation. Contrary to the decades of exaggeration and lies of her critics on the far-Right, Pelosi is *not* a progressive. I’ve been underwhelmed by her lackluster persuasive and communication skills. I’m bothered by her troubling personal financial interests which are in conflict with public service. And, I’ve been an outspoken critic of her opposition to all forms of legalized gambling. In fact, I bristled at the thought of Rep. Pelosi continuing on as party leader, extending her stay way past any reasonable expiration date.
But as I said, she’s also a remarkable woman and her congressional staff might be as skilled as any in the history of Congress.
Now, a new generation of Democrats can step up, move in, fill the void, and hopefully carry the heavy burden of popular progressive ideals. I sincerely hope President Joe Biden soon comes to a similar decision, perhaps a few months from now, and announces he will step aside to make way for new names and fresh faces.
