Mother’s (New Orleans)

Isn’t there an old saying that you shouldn’t eat at a place called “Mother’s?”  Or maybe the saying goes, “Never play poker with a man named ‘Doc,” and don’t eat at a place called “Mom’s.”

Whatever.

Whoever wrote that has never eaten at famous Mother’s Restaurant, on Poydras Street in New Orleans.

Here’s my review.

Forget fine dining.  This is a place where you walk in, stand in line, order at the counter, and sit in a dining room with a concrete floor.

The photo above shows the front entrance to Mother’s.  It’s right across the street from both the W Hotel and the Loew’s Hotel.  It’s one block away from the Harrah’s Casino.

Here’s the line to order food at the counter, at 3:30 pm on a Friday afternoon.  It’s not even lunchtime.  The rush hour is over.  This place is popular!

Fortunately, the line moves pretty fast.  They don’t want you standing around waiting in here.  They want you to eat.

However, be warned that sometimes the line stretches out the door.

You have to love the signs on the wall.  Everything from New Orleans Saints team photos from the 1970s to family portraits of the owners to signs like the one above.

At my table, I couldn’t help but notice a framed and signed photo of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie that seemed to be taken very recently.  He signed it “Thanks for the best meal in New Orleans.  Chris Christie.”

The menu is up on the wall.  It’s actually more of a chalkboard.  The best thing on the menu is Mae’s File Gumbo, which is made with the classic file powder, fresh zesty sausages, chicken, rice, and other spices.  When I die, I want barrels of Mae’s File Gumbo poured over my body.  Please embalm me in it.  Then pour a bottle of Bacardi 151 over me, and light me on fire.  That’s how I want to go out!

Here’s my lunch earlier today:

1.  A fresh house salad with fresh juicy tomatoes with a super tangy vinaigrette dressing (in the steel side cup)

2.  Mae’s File Gumbo with sausage and chicken, served the traditional way with white rice thrown on top, with a few slices of bread

3.  A freshly baked serving of very tender ham

Mmmm.  Mmmm.  Yummy!

Time to say goodbye.  But first, here’s one last look at Mother’s, which is the front dining area.

What a great, cheap place to eat!

  1. Love this place! Not sure I’ve ever had the gumbo before though (even though I’m a gumbo fan). I’m always sucked in by the Ferdi Special and the sausages.
