Money Saved is Just as Sweet as Money Won

“Money won is twice as sweet as money earned.”

Each morning, one of my regular routines is to look at lines and totals on games played that day. I don’t bet every single day, but I do try to keep up with all the major sports and look for betting outliers.

Yesterday, I saw the total (O/U) on the MLB game between Sand Francisco and San Diego was —- 15.5 runs. 15.5!

Keep in mind, the highest totals you usually see in regular season baseball games are almost always played in Denver (Colorado Rockies’ home games) and they might be as high as 12 or 13 runs. Never much higher than that.

So, I saw the total at 15.5 and the game was between these National League rivals, which were not exactly two high-scoring teams. Plus, both ballparks are hitter-neutral (San Francisco was officially listed as the home team). Well, this means the pitchers must really suck, right?

A quick pitcher check revealed very average stats for each starter. So, I thought this might be a rare mistake. Something’s not right about this game.

Well, this being a busy Saturday, another issue came up and I got distracted. I meant to bet the UNDER (obviously). It seemed too good to be true. But then yesterday was busy (we’re having some home improvements done) and I forgot to log in and bet it online.

I completely forgot about the game.

This morning, I looked at the scores from yesterday and see San Diego broke the total by themselves! Oh, and there was something else: The game was played in Mexico City, which is at 7,300 feet elevation, which means any fly ball is probably going to end up landing someplace in Costa Rica. I had no idea there was a MLB game played in Mexico City. So, that explains it.

Final Score: 16-11

Lesson Learned: Sometimes, the games you DON’T BET ON can be winners.

Money won is twice as sweet as money earned? Yeah, and the money saved you would have lost is even sweeter.

Update:  The total on today’s game is 20.5 runs, the highest in MLB history.

  1. If you’re going to bet sports shouldn’t you know where the game is being played?
