Libertarian Candidate Tony Mangnall Covers the Pointspread!

North Dakota’s Libertarian candidate drowning his political sorrows with a magnum micro-brew

We didn’t win, but at least we covered the point spread.

Anthony “Tony” Mangnall, the Libertarian Party candidate for Tax Commissioner in North Dakota can now boast precisely that.  He lost, but at least he covered.  Call it political “bragging rights.”

Mangnall, the television producer–heavy metal guitarist–counterculture maven drew a whopping 6.39 percent of the statewide vote.  That’s over 15,000 ballots cast for an avowed atheist who worships Slayer and owns two stray cats.  He’s even got a hot tattooed girlfriend in his wheelhouse.

Is this a great country or what?

Seriously, Mangnall didn’t spend a dime from his own pocket on the race.  That’s because he had no campaign budget.  As in zippo.  No one even donated to his campaign.  Hell, he didn’t even campaign.  You know, sort of like President Obama these past six months.  Only Mangnall didn’t play any golf.  This is a statewide race where the last election for an up-for-grabs seat in the United States Senate cost $15 million.  How’s that for being economical?  How’s that for staying true to Libertarian principles?  The man’s not just a saint.  He’s a god.

Election night defeat failed to dampen Mangnall’s spirits.  Instead, he actually consumed some spirits at his mock “celebration party,” held at the famed Radisson Hotel in Downtown Fargo, alongside a slate of other Libertarian Party candidates, virtually all of whom also performed far better than expected in this election.  They too covered the spread.

Okay, so the bottom line is — Mangnall didn’t win.  But he showed us and reminded us even what politics should be all about (but sadly isn’t).  Mangnall remained true to himself.  He didn’t compromise, nor hide from his beliefs.  He didn’t take or spend any money.  He didn’t tell a single lie.  He didn’t duck a reporter’s question (okay, so none were asked — but that’s not the point).  And yet, he still leaves us with a lasting positive impression on all those who watched an otherwise dull political race in North Dakota that most people in America wouldn’t give a rat’s ass about.

Mangnall is a true patriot and I have just two words for him:  Run again.  Please.

Okay, so that’s three words.

Next time will be different.  The pressure is on.  Stakes will be much higher.  The opening line is Tony Mangnall  (L-ND) — OVER/UNDER 6.5 percent.  I’ll take the OVER.

Today, North Dakota.  Tomorrow, the world.
