MY RANT:
IT’S NOT NEGLIGENCE, IT’S AN ACT OF NATURE!
I’m sick and tired of predatory lawyers ambulance-chasing every disaster. Something needs to be done about this greed and defamation.
The latest scumbag opportunists are now trying to blame the electric company in Hawaii for the terrible wildfires that caused so many deaths and destruction. A drought? High Winds? Weather triggers? Lots of shit that burns easily? How about this—-living on an island that was *created* by fire and smoke? In other words, if it wasn’t for nature and fire, those people would not exist!
Nope, but the lawyers and the greedy islanders have already filed millions/billions in civil lawsuits seeking damages. The embers in Maui are still burning and bodies have yet to be recovered, and the legal scavengers are trying to shake the pineapple tree and pick the ripest low-hanging fruit. It’s a money tree the size of a volcano.
Hey, people — listen up. It really sucks that you lost everything. The government should do everything in its power to help rebuild and assist you. I’m all for disaster relief and helping people. Truly.
But your reckless disregard of facts and failure to understand that natural disasters HAPPEN (usually in pretty places) is making many of us less sympathetic. Try this: QUIT BLAMING the power company, or FEMA, or the Governor. It was YOU who chose to live on a remote island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. That’s entirely on YOU. What-you expect disaster relief to show up the next day?
As for the power company, allegedly being blamed for not shutting off the power all over the city when winds were high, let’s face the truth: YOU WOULD HAVE SCREAMED AND FLOODED THE SWITCHBOARDS AND SENT COMPLAINTS if the power went off all over the place. You know it. I know it. Everyone knows it. YOU would have been furious at the power company if it shut off power for 15,000 people during a storm.
Moreover, it’s not like there’s any experience with this sort of thing. It’s easy to draw conclusions about what *should* have been done AFTER the fact. Trouble is, dangerous storms can’t be predicted (for the most part). We have no idea where storms are heading or how much damage they will do. And if the power company shut off your refrigerator and internet service and cable TV, you’d be throwing temper tantrums like a 2 year old.
So, quit blaming a small group of workers who, just like you, lived and work in that community and LOST EVERYTHING. You made a decision to live there, and drought warnings had been in force for a long time, and high winds were coming. Given these conditions, FIRES FUCKING HAPPEN. And, it’s NOT the electric company’s fault.
I hope these lawsuits are thrown out of court. I wish the power company could countersue, but that won’t happen. These lawsuits (certain to end up with a settlement) end up costing all the rest of us money, and the lawyers end up getting rich.
So yeah, I’m sick of lawyers (and victims) exploiting natural disasters.
Tell me I’m wrong about this.
