If You Don’t Know Who Dale Hansen Is, Watch This

Ever heard of Dale Hansen?  Most of you haven’t, probably.  Unless you grew up in Dallas or now live in the D/FW metropolitan area, chances are you’ll draw a blank when pondering his name.  Well, that’s about to change.

Dale Hansen has been the sportscaster at ABC television affiliate WFAA in Dallas for more than 30 years.  Always articulate and outspoken, Hansen’s considerable influence extends way beyond sports.  He frequently attacks society’s far more weighty issues, including our attitudes towards guns and violence, gay rights, race relations, and other controversies.  Until somewhat recently, Hansen was the color commentator for the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys on radio, an association which dates back to the early 1980s, during the pre-Jerry Jones Tom Landry-era.  Hansen certainly knows Dallas.  He’s adopted Texas as his home.  And over the past few years, for those who are lucky enough to watch him every night on Channel 8, he’s been a voice worth listening to.

You’re about to see a number of videos with Hansen in top form.  Excerpts run only a few minutes.  The most recent Hansen rant, which appeared earlier this week, is about the Cowboys’ willingness to sign a football player who beats up women.  For Dallas, it’s yet another slippery slide into the pit of the moral abyss, a consistent pattern chosen by megalomaniacal owner Jones unconcerned about anything other than winning, yet doing anything but win ever since former head coach Jimmy Johnson (the real brains) bolted this storied franchise more than two decades ago and left Jerry holding back-to-back Lombardi trophies.  Oh, and the third Super Bowl victory, which occurred two seasons after Johnson bolted the madhouse in Dallas, was won basically with a team the former coach put in place, and Jones inherited (along with Barry Switzer).  All that’s silver isn’t really gold.  Some trophies are tarnished.  The same is true of ethics and morality.

Take a few moments and watch a few of his recent reflections on the events of the day.

(1)  In this first video, Hansen rips the Dallas Cowboys for just signing Greg Hardy, a player who was suspended by the NFL for the 2014 season for beating his former girlfriend:

(2)  Some time ago, Hansen addressed an ugly racial incident that occurred in suburban Dallas, well worth watching and listening to no matter where you live:

(3)  Michael Sam was a hot topic last summer.  Oddly enough, the NFL’s first openly gay player was later signed by the Cowboys but then failed to make the team.  Still, Hansen’s twist on things merits watching:

(4)  Finally, here’s Hansen a few years go railing against the Cowboys signing of another repeat troublemaker, Pacman Jones.  But the best part of the segment is where Hansen takes a shot at Jones for firing him from the radio announcing team and later claiming that Jones’ management has destroyed the legacy of a once-proud franchise.  Bravo!
