DO WE REALLY WANT THE OAKLAND A’S?
Las Vegas baseball fans might get stuck with ownership that only cares about profits instead of winning.
My short take is this:
Be careful what you ask for. The A’s possible relocation to Las Vegas might not be what many local fans expect.
As high-level negotiations continue, the thing that everyone here seems to be missing about the A’s possible relocation to Las Vegas is the stingy ownership, which will stay the same.
They have shown zero commitment to winning. and, believe it or not, the A’s actually *make a profit* (while many big-market winning teams lose money) and that’s all that matters to the present ownership.
So, it’s very possible Las Vegas could inherit a long-suffering franchise that loses 100 games a year and stays at the bottom of the American League West standings for the next decade. But the owners will make money, lots of money, especially if they can screw the local taxpayers to pay for their new stadium deal.
Just remember — Las Vegas not only possibly gets a losing team, we also carry their heavy baggage. We might also get stuck with ownership that only cares about profits instead of winning.
This isn’t to say I’m against MLB coming to Las Vegas. In fact, I would support any new team, or expansion team, with my interest. Nonetheless, local fans better rethink the composition of the team they’ll be cheering for, and something tells me this city will NOT embrace a longtime loser.
