Corey Levitan: Las Vegas’ Mythbuster

Here’s a shout out to Corey Levitan for his excellent research and interesting articles, which –come to find out– I’ve enjoyed for many years living here in Las Vegas. I strongly encourage subscribing to his Facebook feed, especially if you’re a local and/or you enjoy reading about our city’s people and history.  CLICK HERE

Corey isn’t just a writer, but a myth buster. Perhaps debunker is the better word. He ponders tales and half-truths we thought were real, and often reveals what’s behind the deceit. Unfortunately, many of the things we thought were real are not. This is, after all, a city built largely on illusion and fantasy.

A quick Corey story I’ll share:

In a recent conversation with him, I learned that Corey was the staff writer who used to do one of my favorite local news series. About 15 years ago, he wrote for the Las Vegas Review Journal. One of his weekly features was taking a job for a day or two, then writing about his impressions in the newspaper. So, Corey worked as a valet parker. A buffet waiter. He even worked the graveyard shift as a BINGO caller at a dive casino, then wrote a hilarious column about it. I forgot all the (temp) jobs he did over the years, but each one was an experience and reading those stories made me (and others) feel like we knew more about the job than before. It even gave the reader some appreciation for the work, in most cases. Yet oddly enough, before a recent engagement with Corey, I didn’t connect his present writing with that memorable series in the LVRJ years ago. So, reading his stuff now is a wonderful rediscovery.

Lately, from his more recent writings I’ve learned a real story behind Elvis’ record number of “sold out” shows, what really caused the infamous tiger attack during a Seigfried and Roy performance, and much more. Here’s his latest article about Sphere, which is a dynamic attraction certain to redefine Las Vegas and its iconic skyline. Naturally, with so many fakes and frauds out there, many of the “images” you’ve seen posted and shared on social media are NOT real. CLICK LINK HERE

The truth matters. Fortunately, Corey and others are there willing to dig and find it. The least we can do is pay attention.

Great work, C.L.
