Conservatives Lose Their Shit Over Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Conservatives who have been wrong about everything over the course of history are now losing their shit over Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Why do they feel so threatened by a 29-year-old freshman congresswoman?

Ocasio-Cortez, the photogenic 28-year-old soon-to-be-elected congresswoman, is a virtual certainty to be representing New York’s 14th Congressional District, come next January.  She shocked the national political establishment, including many Democrats, by upsetting Rep. Joe Crowley, a deeply entrenched 10-term congressman in the party primary held in June.  Ocasio-Cortez is considered a lock by most experts to win the overwhelmingly Democratic district located in the heart of New York City.  Hey, not too bad for a former bartender and campaign volunteer with little previous political experience.

Of course, Ocasio-Cortez’s unlikely victory comes at a cost.  Right-wing media and their terrible trolls are now going bonkers.  They’ve pulled out switchblades and are heading uptown.  Her surprising political triumph ignited a firestorm of derision and hate, particularly from the Alt-Right press and even several Republican elected officials (one GOP congressman called her “this girl….or whatever she is”) who typically wouldn’t give a Ronald Reagan asscheek about some unwinnable congressional district smack dab in the middle of the Bronx.  When Trumpster humpers look at Ocasio-Cortez, they don’t see a young, up-and-coming, left-leaning Democrat.  They see Fidel Castro, only with sex appeal.  To these cretin conservatives, anyone to the political left of Newt “Knock Three Times” Gingrich is a communist.

Ocasio-Cortez is a self-described Democratic Socialist.  Such a bold declaration makes her a Leftist in this country.  In any other industrialized western nation — be it Canada, England, France, Germany, or anywhere in Scandinavia — she’d be in the center of the national political spectrum.  Fortunately, a kindred philosophical spirit and maverick by the name of Sen. Bernie Sanders obliterated century-old taboos of “the evils of socialism” when he nearly won the Democratic presidential nomination just two years ago.  Millions of working-class Americans listened to Sanders’ ideas unfiltered, and many concluded for themselves that socialist policies weren’t so crazy-sounding, after all.  In fact, they sounded pretty good.  Given his age, however, Sen. Sanders is clearly in the twilight of his career and influence.  Ocasio-Cortez, I predict, will be the first of many of his political disciples.

Indeed, Ocasio-Cortez is a younger and prettier version of Sanders which, correctly in the minds of image-conscious conservatives, makes her far more dangerous.  Seeing a crack in their dam of deceit, they want her discredited now — at any cost.  They insist, she must be stopped.  Despite their own embarrassing multitude of failures on every level of governance, they’ll do anything to mock, ridicule, misrepresent, scare, and destroy — whatever it takes.

So, what’s the big deal?  What are conservatives so afraid of?

I have no idea what the actual percentage of Democratic Socialists is within America.  However, I’ll venture a guess and say it’s probably somewhere around 10 percent of voters.  Let’s say I’m very wrong about this.  Let’s say Democratic Socialists are actually only about 5 percent of the American population.  Okay then, given there are 435 seats in Congress, proportional representation would mean Democratic Socialists would hold about 22 seats.  But, something’s amiss.  We’re not being represented, at all.  Wanna’ know how many Democratic Socialists are currently seated in Congress?

Zero.  None.

So, Ocasio-Cortez is destined to become the first (and only) Democratic Socialist holding a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.  She will be precisely 1/435th (of half) of the legislative branch of government, which amounts to about .11 percent of the vote (note the decimal point).  She will be about 1/10th of one percent of the entire Congress.

Shudder!

So, what happens to conservatives at the prospect of Joe Stalin’s ghost crawling over the barricades with a whopping .11 percent of the Congress.?  Here’s what happens: They totally lose their shit.  Should you doubt this, visit any Alt-Right propaganda website.  I won’t dignify the trash by posting any links.  Plugin Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez” into a Google search and the screen lights up like a burning cross in Alabama.

After several progressive candidates squarely in the Ocasio-Cortez mold lost primary races this week, particularly in the critically-important Midwest, her critics were quick to pop the champagne and celebrate.  But Ocasio-Cortez was saddled with ridiculously high expectations in the wake of her upset win, as though she alone could turn the tide in other parts of the country.  Undeniably a new sensation within a party desperately in need of an exciting new face, she was tasked with touring nationally in an effort to mobilize younger voters for the upcoming general election in November, particularly within minority communities.  The strategy turned out to be a mixed bag.  She certainly will help bring new voters to the polls.  But we still have a way to go before we become the People’s Republic of Sweden.

To be fair, Ocasio-Cortez needs to work on her game.  She has to step up.  She’s already committed at least one gaffe, rightly meriting both concern and criticism.  For instance, during a sit-down interview a few weeks ago she flubbed an important question about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  Ocasio-Cortez was and is entirely correct in her balanced assessment of a serious problem, that the United States should be an honest broker for peace in the region.  But if she’s going to boldly speak out on behalf of Palestinians, a position which entails obvious risks politically-speaking, she’s got to get her act together.  This is especially true for someone running for public office in New York and presumptively a future member of Congress, which has been leashed and collared by Israel through its proxy A.I.P.A.C. for decades.

When pressed for details and asked to explain her position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Ocasio-Cortez stated she’s “not the expert.”  Three words.  “Not the expert.”  That’s what set off the firestorm, most of the fiery criticism coming from the same contingent who once thought Sarah Palin was qualified to be president.

What’s really mind-blowing is recognizing just how dead fucking wrong so many of Ocasio-Cortez’s critics have been for so many years — on every single issue.  Yet, despite their obvious failures, doing the same thing over and over again somehow masquerades as “normalcy.”  Fifteen years ago, all the old patriotic guys with the drawls insisted that we launch two unwinnable wars in the Middle East, costing thousands of lives and trillions in treasure.  And now here we are, wallowing in massive debt, still fighting in places where there are no victories, blowing immeasurable sums of money, domestic infrastructure crumbling, with no end in sight.  While Ocasio-Cortez may not be “an expert,” to use her own words, I’d sure rather hear some honest answers.  The so-called political “experts,” mostly rich old white-guys with law degrees, sure have fucked a lot of things up.  Might be time for the wisdom of a young progressive bartender, instead.

To wit:

Ocasio-Cortez’s critics deny global climate change is happening, even though each of the last three years has been the hottest ever recorded.  These are the “experts.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s critics want to gut the Environmental Protection Agency and eliminate protections for endangered species.  These are the “experts.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s critics are determined to deregulate financial markets and banking, although those exact same policies nearly created a global economic meltdown and mass panic ten years ago.  These are the “experts.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s critics gave us hundreds of billions in tax cuts for the super-rich, even though “trickle-down” economics time and time again have failed to work These are the “experts.”

You get the point.

Based on recent history, it sure sounds like we need a lot fewer “experts” representing us, and a few more new faces and brave voices like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

  1. Great post Nolan. She has a long road to hoe and does need to tune up, but as you said – she’s young, eager and photogenic so they’ll want to throw a lot of weight on her shoulders.
And the ignorant bell ringing and dog whistle blowing around her – the “I can’t to laugh at the next thing she says” crowd – only goes to show they don’t even care they’re wrong.
