Assigning Blame in Houston

Houston rap concert

The only lawsuits that should be filed should be against the individual perpetrators of the deadly act.  Not the rappers.  Not the organizers.  Not the city.  Not the police.

Okay, let me get this straight.

A bunch of idiots bullrush the stage at a rap concert in Houston, create mass chaos, 8 people die, many more are injured and yet somehow this is all…..

….the performers’ fault?
….the show organizers’ fault?
….the police department’s fault?
….the City of Houston’s fault?

Bullshit.

How about this?

Maybe it’s the fault of the out-of-control idiots who bull-rushed the stage!

How about charging the maniacal mob who created death and chaos with crimes? They should be able to be identified from film footage. How about suing the asses off the punks who recklessly endangered thousands of lives and created havoc? Identify THEM. Charge THEM. Sue THEM.

Of course, this won’t happen. Who knows how many BS lawsuits are going to be filed? Three lawsuits are already on the books, trying to get in on the money heist while bodies are still stacked like cordwood in the morgue. Of course, they’ll sue the performers (who didn’t know what was happening and kept on rapping). They’ll sue the show organizers (who followed the standard practice of most live shows, which are ALL like this — if you don’t believe me, look at the videos of any mosh pit). And, they’ll sue the police and the city because that’$$$ where the big money is. Note: I wish they’d countersue.

Fact is, this was a terrible tragedy caused by reckless idiots, many probably drunk or high or both. Venues and organizers should not be held responsible for random occurrences committed by patrons, assuming they’ve provided the basics of a safe concert experience. That basically means so long as shit isn’t falling on the crowd, the people in the audience are responsible for protecting themselves. Just as a mass shooting is the fault of the shooter (and not the venue), this incident should be blamed on the fools who created the problem with their dangerous actions. Performers, organizers, and security should not have to pay for the reckless stupidity of individuals.

The only lawsuits that should be filed should be against the individual perpetrators of the deadly act.

Of course, this won’t be a popular viewpoint. Many will jump on “rap culture,” (dog whistles, anyone?) ignoring the blatant fact that rock and roll concerts have occasionally created the same disasters (Cincinnati 1979, Altamont 1969 — were the Who and the Rolling Stones sued for those deadly concert incidents?). Don’t blame the show organizers, who I fail to see how they’re guilty of any negligence given that there have to be reasonable assurances that people won’t behave like coked-up wild animals — and if and when they do, it’s on THEM.
