Some Good News from Jack McClelland

Last year, I had the honor of emceeing the induction of Jack McClelland into the Poker Hall of Fame

All poker players owe a debt of gratitude to Jack McClelland, who has dedicated much of his life to the game he loves.

Jack served as tournament director of the World Series of Poker for more than a decade (1988 through 1999).  He later ran many of the biggest and most successful events on the World Poker Tour (2002 through 2012).  Jack also served as Tournament Director at the Bellagio for many years, until his retirement in 2013.  He’s also a devoted poker player.

Because we’ve worked together off and on and been friends for many years, Jack has shared news of his most recent health crisis with me on a regular basis.  I knew that many within the poker community — players and industry professionals alike — would want to know about his condition, and be kept up to date as to how he’s dealing with a life-threatening situation.  No doubt, thousands of people care about Jack and want him to pull through, while he awaits a heart transplant.  He granted permission to release various updates, which culminated in his induction into the Poker Hall of Fame, last year.

JACK MCCLELLAND — A MAN WITH HEART (February 2014)

AN UPDATE FROM JACK MCCLELLAND (September 2014)

THOUGHTS ON JACK MCLELLAND’S INDUCTION INTO THE POKER HALL OF FAME (October 2014)

A few days ago, Jack e-mailed me in which he shared the latest on his condition.  Unfortunately, he still hasn’t received a heart transplant yet.  However, Jack is continuing to make some real progress.  Here is part of that e-mail:

Dear Nolan (and Everyone):

For the first time in 20 months I finally feel better.  Here’s the short version:

Dec. 2013 — Heart transplant needed

Mar. 2014 — Heart strength at 2.30.  Added to transplant list.

May 2014 — Heart strength at 2.13.  As soon as heart strength goes under 2.00, patient moves into hospital full time until a heart is found.  Many times a long wait period.

Feb. 2015 — Volunteered for a clinical study.  Got 25 injections into my heart.  50/50 chance placebo or stem cells.  I don’t know which.

Aug. 2015 — Heart test.  Placebo means heart strength under 2.00 for sure.  Hello hospital.  Higher than 2.13, then I probably got stem cells.  Long restless night before test.  After test, I learn that my heart strength is now 2.80!!!   This is very good news. 🙂

Still, I have lost a lot of weight and most of my muscle strength.  Unable to exercise (shortness of breath, fatigue).  But I feel much better mentally and hope to resume exercising after the weather cools off.

I would like to thank EVERYONE for their prayers and support.  I no longer believe I need to catch runner-runner to win this pot.  I’m drawing very much live.   🙂

Always your friend,

Jack McClelland
