ESPN’s “30 for 30” Podcast: Remembering the 2003 World Series of Poker

Chris Moneymaker’s stunning storybook victory in the 2003 World Series of Poker is rightly remembered as the seminal event when poker went from smoke-filled backrooms to boardrooms and living rooms.  It the moment when poker grew up.  It’s the dividing line between the good old days and the modern era.  It ignited what became known as “the poker boom.”  A new podcast by ESPN captures some of those memories.

I was interviewed as part of this story.

ESPN just released a special “30 for 30” podcast which recounts the unlikeliest of poker champions and the circus of events behind the scenes.  Reported by Keith Romer and hosted by Jody Avirgan, this one-hour program includes interviews with all the key participants who came together at Binion’s Horseshoe in Downtown Las Vegas and unknowingly would change poker history.

I was interviewed for the program and my recollections appear throughout the broadcast — along with Chris Moneymaker, Matt Maranz (ESPN’s head of production), Norman Chad (commentator), Matt Savage (tournament director), and others.
