My Cat “Alex” Predicts the Super Bowl Winner

’

You know Alex.

He’s our 12-year-old ginger boy, adopted from a homeless shelter in Washington, D.C. when he was a kitten.  He’s the only cat in history to have played a hand of poker at the old Binion’s Horseshoe, which happened a few months before the place closed down.

Alex is retired now and living comfortably in Las Vegas.  He spends most of his life sleeping.

Lucky for us, Alex made some extra special time for us this morning.  He’s eager to help all the busted gamblers out there who haven’t placed their bets yet on the Super Bowl.  Alex feels mighty generous, especially after a healthy dose of catnip.

Speaking of catnip, Alex was asked his opinions on the side and the total.  I surveyed Alex in order to find out who will win the game — Denver or Seattle.  I also wanted to know if the game will go OVER or UNDER the betting total, which is 48 points at the moment.

Unfortunately, Alex lost interest in the betting props very quickly.  We tried to get his take on the outcome of the coin flip, the over/under-on-field goals, and all the other wacky propositions.  But a stray housefly seemed more interesting to Alex than handicapping a football game.  Next, after crunching on a few bits of Purina, he took a 92-minute nap on the living room sofa.

After a trip to the litter box, scratching the leather chair in the office for three minutes, and vomiting in the hallway, I finally managed to coral Alex’s attention for a few seconds.

A few tender morsels of Pounce were strategically placed in order to determine Alex’s opinion of the game.  After sniffing the Seattle morsel for about three seconds, Alex turned to the other treat, and promptly took it into his mouth, and began chewing.

Score Alex’s vote for the Denver Broncos.

Two more morsels of Pounce were placed on the floor.  The one on the right symbolized taking the OVER.  The left one meant taking the UNDER.

Alex seemed interested for a few seconds.  He sniffed at both morsels but didn’t take the bait.  He seemed to shrug and then walked away.  After that, Alex jumped on the bed and went back to sleep for 2 hours and 16 minutes.

Hence, Alex apparently thinks the total is lined just right.  Perhaps he thinks it will land right on the number 48.  We’ll see.

So, there you have it.  Alex predicts the Denver Broncos will be the champions of the Super Bowl whatever the Roman numerals are.

Oh, and one more thing.  Alex insists he’s not watching the game as a protest.  He’s not interested unless the Lions, Bengals, or Panthers are playing.  He’s planning on a five-hour sleep later this afternoon.
