A Very Bad Good Friday

no-booze

Who knew on so-called “Good Friday,” that it’s illegal to serve an alcoholic beverage — in Ireland?

Sounds more like “Bad Friday,” to me.  Or perhaps, Black Friday.  Or at least — Dry Friday.

Apparently, there’s a national law here that’s been in existence since the days of Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair.  All the bars and pubs completely shut down, supposedly in a concerted effort to ritualize a bloody torture scene that was played out in Jerusalem some nearly 2,000 years ago.  This begs the question, “Why must I suffer?”

[Photo Above:  See the notice posted in the lobby of the hotel, here in Dublin, which advises guests of the drinking law on this day]

Just to make things clear I flew 6,500 miles to the homeland of Jameson and Guinness, arriving in the great city of Dublin where there isn’t just one pub on every street corner, but usually between two and four, and they’re usually packed inside.  Tonight, I will be limited to one beer which must be consumed with dinner.  And, as everyone knows, I never drink with food.

Let me check where I am again, exactly.  Is this Ireland….or Indiana?.  That comparison would have been Alabama a week ago, but I’m trying to keep my references current.

My guess is that this ridiculous law does no good whatsoever.  Residents of this proud nation likely hide their six-packs and cherished liters in the privacy of their homes, and there’s probably just as much drinking going on in private, behind closed doors.  No doubt, they’re all drinking — while praying.

As for me, it’s going to be a very bad “Good Friday.”  At least, when I order my one drink, can I make it a double?

  1. There are exceptions. You can go to the airport, train station, or ferry. Also, if you like dog racing you can go to the track.

My family lives in Belfast and the Ulster area around Ballinlea in county Antrim. Wish I was there to have a pint with you!

If it’s any consolation, the law should be overturned by next Easter. Lol

    • Next easter! Lol

  2. You put the ire in Ireland.

  3. Ha!

Like you’re gonna have just one!

Maybe it’s a cleansing of some sort, so you can be filled with a different SPIRIT.

IRISH are a tricky lot bubba!

And yes, everyone is drinking! So go buy some pot n chill.

Love reading your takes on items like these!!!

    “Why must I suffer!”.
